I notice the excellent separation of subject from background. Nice work.

I got mine new at adorama for $1169 with full us warranty 3 weeks ago. If they don't advertise that price ask for a salesperson, chat them up, and get this price.

I should find a better forum to carry on my D200/CCD adventure, I will let you know when I find one or start one.

If you are into action photography the ISO limits on the D200 are an issue. I use it for landscape and nature mostly. As I become more familiar with this place and my tail-feathers grow back I will create some albums that attempt to demonstrate what differences between the CCD and CMOS sensors have caught my attention.

Thanks again

Good luck on finding a functional battery. My final solution was to go to Batteries Plus where they rebuild the batteries.

If that's not helpful, then you truly are the asshole you appear to be on helpful hints.

Thanks for the tip. I found an en4 substitute and car charger for a very reasonable price -- this is a new area for me and I hope the sub allows me to use the Dx1. If that doesn't work I will take your advice.

Hi Zeitguy,

I have read all responses, and feel that your reply back to Zeitguy was totally uncalled for. If you didn't find it useful...just move on.

(I just can't wait to read your condescending remark back to me! <big grin>)

I owed riderxlx an apology and provided it. If you and I ever get to know each other you will find out I am quite mild-mannered but capable of asshole moments, which I will own as soon as I realize what happened. That's all I got.

Ironically you have made me feel welcome here despite the sting in my first response to you.

My interest in CCDs has reached a kind of mystical level of fascination. To that, I would say: I think the Nikon D200 is pretty special. If it was the only camera I could use I wouldn't mind, and I have used the best you can find commercially. It pains me that people with perfectly good imaging instruments literally "lose sight" of their love of photography when numbers get thrown around. Enjoy what you have, and others will too!

Your civility will make everyones day a little brighter.

Here is some limited technical info you can mix in to your decision.

The important qualitative difference between ff and crop used to be a matter of the size of the photosites which correspond to single pixels on the sensor. Ff formats gave more room for bigger photosites, given the same resolution, which translates into more absolute information acquired from the scene. Smaller photosites capture fewer photons and that determines the limits on the software ability to interpolate tone gradation, reduce noise without interpolation, distinguish subtleties in hue, and all the good things artists care about.

The answer to your question 8 years ago would be an easy "yes" to the full frame. At that time the pixel count peaked at around 12 million and in the Nikon world, that translated into around 70 square micron photosites in the FX D700 compared to 35 square micron photosites on the crop (dx) D90. Your ff Canon only has about 35 square micron sites, while your 70D struggles along with fewer than 20 square microns!

These numbers still matter in landscape and portrait photography - areas where subtle gradations in values and hues count as much as detail.

By that measure, today's full frame cameras with 24-36 megapixels can't compete for image quality with the 2010-2012 versions, and forget crop sensors with 4 micron photosites packed 24 million into their crowdwd matrices.

This web site will give you an idea of the difference in light-gathering area of the Canon ff vs an older Nikon FX.

Unfortunately it is more complicated than absolute size. Especially now the sampling strategies and reconstruction algorithms can sometimes overcome the advantages of absolute size. Some newer cameras oversample photosites 5x and dither the samples fractional widths of the site, which effectively doubles or triples the absolute amount of actual photon information acquired despite the low capacity of the site

Probably there is no substitute for trying a camera for as long as you can borrow or rent it, and see how you like it. What else will matter as much in the long run?

I must apologize because I did not intend my reply to come across like that.
I just quickly looked to see if there was any still out there as a curious courtesy for you.
If this is how you respond to people on this site, so be it, you being a 'newbie' , will find that that this attitude will not get you far.
Many replies from members to members waver off point to some degree.
May your bitterness turn to peace.

Thanks for the clarification. It helps. I have been on the internet since 1986 usenet days and if someone seems patronizing they usually are. You clearly aren't. And you probably know the frustration of getting patronizing-sounding advice yourself. Fwiw I was on ugly hedgehog years ago and we couldn't find my account, and I have been on a dozen other substantial online communities as moderator, newbie, and everything else but troll. I am not bitter, but I have a hair-trigger now for bogus. Maybe I need to dial a little slack back into my perception.

The graciousness of your reply reminds me that the infosphere is still populated by decent, distracted humans worthy of a considerate reply. Thanks.

I know how to Google and I have examined all the offerings on eBay for a while. Your response is presumptious and a waste of both our time.

If you don't have a camera to sell please save your patronizing advice for your own children.

I am retired and an avid amateur photographer with a special interest in Nikon equipment. My side project right now involves exploring ccd sensor based cameras from the 2000-2012 era. I would like to get a nikon d1 h or x model with battery and charger that is in decent condition.

If you have one you are willing to sell in the $50-$80 range let me know. That budget is dictated by a fixed income.

Thank you.
Jeff

If I understand the purpose of this request:

You can simply use the self-timer to avoid the problem.
