One thing I didn't see anyone mention is WHY you want to scan the slides. I stopped shooting slide film over 35 years ago but over Easter weekend I felt the urge to see family and since we could not actually be out because of the pandemic I pulled some old family slides. I realized then that some of my slides were deteriorating and that all of them fell into 2 groups. Some that were were of events that I literally don't even remember and have no use to save and others are precious family memories that I want to pass on to the next generation. I already had an Epson Scanner and started that very night and have probably spent an average of about an hour a day since then on my project and have finished maybe between 2,000 and 3,000 slides. Once I got the workflow down to what I wanted I really started enjoying it - a good thing to do in the evening while watching TV. I don't have a working projector so scanning and then viewing on the computer is a good way to actually see what is on the slide. It's easy then to decide which ones to keep and which ones to toss. But a lot of nights I don't even turn on the scanner. Some slides show evidence of color shifts or fading and some were just not the best exposure or composure and I can fix that in my photo editing program with a little color correction work and or cropping. BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING is to IDENTIFY the who and what is on the slide and make notes of it. I put that info right in the META data with the scan. I firmly believe that without that information the slides will be worthless to anyone else but hopefully taking the time to provide the life story that goes with the picture will make the scans valuable to the next generation. For me having the chance to re-live all of those memories has been well worth the time I have spent.

The first camera we gave our son when he was about 7 or 8 was a disposable camera from Walgreens. He shot the film on a short day trip and we had them processed and printed right away. He liked the experience and then we bought a low priced digital. It was fun for him to see the prints and we knew he had a real interest. He is 15 now and still remembers the experience and probably still has the prints somewhere in his room.

I just received several emails from Snapfish telling me that my photos would be deleted unless I placed a order but to make it more attractive they offered me 20 free prints AND shipping so I took advantage of it. Not sure if they limit the number or size of the photos they store but using their service might be another option.

I again enjoyed your shots. In addition to the quality of the pictures I like the way you give some background information on the subject and also the technical information about how how you took the shot. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

All I can say is WOW. I started going to EAA when they moved their Fly In to Oshkosh some 48 years ago. And except for some years in the 1980s and 1990s when I missed because of a conflicting family event I have probably been there over 100 times - I live about 25 miles from Wittman Field and so it was easy to leave work an hour or two early just to catch the air show in addition to all day Saturday and Sunday visits. One of my fondest memories is seeing the great radio commentator Paul Harvey when he spoke. I am not a pilot and my main reason for going was to take pictures. One year EAA even granted me a press pass. But of all the pictures that I took and others that I have seen I must say that yours are easily the best I have seen. I am looking forward to going thru your Flickr account and enjoying your other work. Thanks for sharing.

You have put a lot of your time and talent in taking these shots and presenting them with the historical information. Well Done.

We have not dropped cable yet but are getting close. More and more we are finding that YouTube has all the variety of programming that we want.

I agree about the terrible way titles are sometimes written. The problem is that the posters are missing out on getting good advice when they don't put the subject of their post in the title. If others are like me we are too busy to read every post and so when I see a title like "I have a question" and they do not indicate what it is about I just ignore those and go on to one that I think will be interesting and/or I think I may be able to help.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to this and maybe I am from the old school but to me there is still something special about holding and sharing an actual printed photo. If I have the space I would keep the originals. And if you have the time and are interested I would also make a note of the digital file name on the back of the print (using photo safe pencils or pens) to help keep them organized.

I know that changes to a JPEG image are not lossless because of the way they are compressed and I am OK with that because I make the changes that I need once and then that is my permanent final version of the photo. But I often change the file name and especially add keywords to the files as I review them. I have not been able to find an answer to my question if those changes to the non image part of the file cause any degradation to the picture itself - in which case I would change my photo processing workflow. Does anyone know of a definite answer to this? Thanks

The question I have about 1 hour printing in any store is the LONG TERM quality. I just started using a service that provides prints made with the true photography Silver Halide process. I assume that those prints should last a long time. Has anyone seen any studies on how long the prints from the 1 hour labs should last?
