IMHO, Check your manual for the operating/storage temperature range of your camera and act only when your expected conditions vary outside that range. Then don’t worry. Other than that, I personally don’t fret about it. I do like to keep temperature changes as slowly as I can control. Gradual warmups and cool downs are generally better for the equipment, as many have noted.

I HAVE learned my lesson. You are correct that it was not on a strap. Still, if I had landed on it ...

What do you recommend?

Well - that which never happens TO ME (lol) did happen. This is not a discussion about what I did incorrectly, just an FYI for D850 Owners.

I was trail walking in Grand Teton NP and was mentally composing my next shot when a solid root “jumped up” and tripped me at full stride, D850 in my right hand.

I went down hard, breaking 2 ribs, and the D850 landed about 20 feet ahead of me.

Just to let you know, the camera and 28-70 nikkor survived without a scratch thanks to the hard lens hood on which it landed face down. The camera continues to function flawlessly with flawless focus. This is one SOLID dslr.

I sent it in to Nikon for NPS service, inspection, and cleaning to be sure and NO damage was found.

If you have purchased a D850, then you should feel good about its durability.

I suspect that it is an issue with the battery-to-grip connection. I purchased a new battery, grip, end cap, and charger, all Nikon, from B&H. NONE solves the problem. Tried on another D850. Same problem. MUST send to Nikon.

I just sent in my D850 for the very same problem. The only “ solution “ is a trip to Nikon repair shop. Disappointed.

Alienware is my choice due to its discrete NVIDIA graphics card. IMHO.

Does your local technology college offer classes on DSLR photography? They can go from beginner to advanced within several classes. Also, post-processing might be covered. Relax and have fun with it and continue to seek out hoggers for guidance. Rich

Quick comment-be aware that “true” macro lenses are corrected for flatness of field and not “regular lenses with a ‘macro’ setting.” Best bet for images of flat objects, but quite possibly out of your spending limit.

mwsilvers: My interest is in the upoint technology in RAW processing but NOT as a stand-alone application. I almost bought in. Thanks so very much for the clarification. I am a heavy Viveza user. Way to go!!!

Sorry for multiple replies. I will be driving a very capable 4wd vehicle and have been advised by rangers as to out of the way places not accessible by car. I, too, am unable to hike challenging trails. Not happy now with the $2k non-refundable deposit for lodging in August. Please advise further, hoggers!
