Those of you who have owned both, what is your feeling? I'm not asking for the all specification differences. . . That is available anywhere and everywhere.

I'm asking for your professional subjective impressions gleaned from living with and working with these two Pro cameras.

Crabs and curmudgeons need not reply.

Thanks

Seems like it has been somewhat said already, but just to reinforce:
If you buy a D3 series camera, the D3S is far improved over the D3, and can be had for about the same price.

Also, like the D5, the D3S is a much different beast than the prosumer & consumer cameras. Big, heavy, built like a tank, better viewfinder, a true PRO camera. If you've never handled a true pro camera before, you're in for a treat.

Another factor you might consider: Buying the D3S is not only less money to try, but also less chance of taking a loss if you decide to resell it, since the prices have settled down to a stable baseline. A newer camera is still deflating in price MUCH more rapidly. I would say try the D3S for the summer, and if you don't like it you can sell it in the fall for all your money back. A worthwhile experience which will likely shed much light on your efforts.

In the NYC street scene photo above, check out the 4th kid in from the left!
Puttin' up his dukes :)

I studied each and every face in that photo some years ago. . . each with their own individual story to tell.

Fascinating. I wonder which if any may still be alive? Further, I wonder if most of them ever even saw the photo.

This is the kind of stuff that's REAL. What a shame it would be if it were never captured because of the "thought police" curtailing everything we do and think.

Some of the most interesting (to me) photos I have ever seen were from times long past. Photos that would likely be disallowed or at least frowned upon by the "behavior police" nowadays who seem to think they need to control everything we think and do and say without their express permission.

One photo I really enjoyed studying was of some inner city children (oh my!) playing in a NYC street on a hot summer day in the 1930s. A water main had burst, and the street was flooded. Most of them took advantage of the impromptu "swimming pool" to have fun and get a little respite from the sweltering summer heat. Photographs of those kinds of moments are priceless captures, forever frozen in time.

Who is anybody to say that the photographer did some kind of wrong by snapping that shot? I think that the people who would find some kind of wrong in it are actually the ones who are wrong-headed.

I think it is absurd & silly for people to get all crazy about a photographer taking pictures of them. Anything that is already open to public view in the "public square" should be fair game for photography.

What I would obviously be opposed to are behaviors by photographers which are unreasonably imposing. . . such as firing off a high-power flash near a stranger's face without warning, or using a "selfie stick" to take a shot up a lady's skirt, or getting so close to a subject that you intrude upon their activity.

Taking shots of some kids playing soccer on a public field should not require special permission. Cameras are not weapons.

Lightroom is VERY popular on here, and some people online in forums tend to get a little tribal about their preferences. Personally, I think you can still express your support and preference for something without becoming insulting, dismissive, and condescending.

Sadly, when shielded from natural, face-to-face human engagement, online armchair warriors often behave & speak in ways in which they would never dare in-person. If you don't like a topic, a question, a comment, or an observation, you are free to move on, or to express your own insights in a helpful way. There is no need, and no benefit to being unkind.

Interested...what is the year of manufacture? Does Nikon still service it? Thank you.

This camera was manufactured right up until the Nikon D4 came out in 2012. Then it continued to be sold brand new in dealerships alongside the D4 for a few more years until they were all sold. Nikon USA only services USA model cameras, and this is a USA model. All Nikon Authorized Service Centers provide service subject to parts availability. Standard adjustments and cleaning are not a problem, but if you drop it off a building or run it over with your truck, I suppose you could need something which is no longer in stock at Nikon. Even in that case, there are a large number of parts spread out among all the Nikon Authorized Service Centers nationwide. There is also a large market for very inexpensive used/salvaged camera parts on Ebay and other sites. For what it's worth, I have had four Nikons over the last 39 years, and I haven't needed a single part or repair yet.
