Yes they are Lucian, technically sepia... or monotone. I just generalize... and call it B&W.
BTW... thank you everyone for your comments... very kind.

My neighbor has a beautiful garden! SO when I couldn't stand it anymore I just HAD to ask.... mu I take some photos in your amazing garden. She was ok with that, still didn't learn anything about her except she is from England [accent]. But I am a man... we are not nosey like you ladies are lol.
Here are some examples of what I was able to find.

ok so here it is.... the way I see it.
I have read so many tutorials over the lest few days.... and I am still at square one.
I have made almost ZERO progress.
To some of you it is a simple 5 minute task and off you go and create wonderful exciting images.
For the rest of us... I quote Joshua Johnson. " The term mask isn't immediately understandable to someone outside the realm of graphic design"

Well... that is where I am gonna leave it.
I am going to stick to just plain old regular photography, and to hell with this "realm of graphic design".
I have made myself sick... literally... trying to understand the concept.
I will never understand it... I will never "own it."
There are a lot of values in Photoshop that serve me well.

I even understand layers, in that I can do quite a lot of processes.

But dare I cross over that line to masks???

Like I said in the other thread... it is time for me to draw the line in the sand.
It would appear to make a tiny bit of sense for a very brief moment, and then the next time I try something … or the same process; no matter what I do there is just a mass of confusion and no direction.

I will never understand masks... so in my world... there is no point in continuing with this absolutely unreachable goal.

If you guys out there can understand it... then good. Like I said before my brain is wired differently and so there is not now, and never will be, any connection to that reality for me.

So... thanks to the many folks who stepped up to help me in the recent thread on understanding masks.
I am getting the idea of how this works now.
I am still, however, in the hunt and peck stage of this process as there seems to be still mysteries to be solved. I need to go back to my notes and get a better understanding on how to manipulate... aka navigate thru the layers.
I have found an excellent tutorial on using layers, but this dude talks so dang softly I am going to have to invest in a good set of earbuds to hopefully hear what he is saying LOL.

Anyway.... just sharing... and thx again to all the folks who helped me get a little further with this masking and layers scenario.

Hey ESWO.... go to HR block. Our taxes are always complicated [multiple properties and incomes] and they have been very good for us foe many years.

Point taken Rich.... glad you pointed that out. There is a way around that though. the ole "save as".
I do that a lot when I want to make changes to a photo.
That being said... either avenue would work.

okay.... I finally understand this .
Just when I was ready to walk away from it.... in fact I had walked away. My wife convinced me.... or more accurately would not shut up until I let her take a look at the problem.
CREATE LAYER FROM BACKGROUND..... jeeezez. If I right click on the thumbnail image in the top right layer panel and select layer from background, AND THEN.... and ONLY then click on the layer mask button.... THEN I can continue on and start getting results.
I just did NOT understand the difference between layer from background, and duplicate layer.
It is all quite obvious once I am able to see it.
Yeah ok....so maybe for some, or rather one of you it is all …. DUH! Well "DUH" is NOT helpful at all in any language. What WAS helpful was to just sit here and re read everything and translate it into my "other planet" interpretation until the light came on.
Everyone learns differently... I have to translate into "dumbass English".
Now that I appear to have found the "missing gear from the clock that made it impossible to work", I am at least moderately hopeful that I will continue to understand this concept; and begin to apply my imagination as I would like to; rather than using sub standard alternatives.
SO... thx to my wife who wouldn't shut up.... and to you guys [with one exception] who didn't give up on me, I can move on.... maybe even produce some halfway decent results.

Then there is something wrong with my software?
I cant get an active mask layer unless I open a duplicate layer.
If I go to the mask symbol and click on that... I get nothing.
Like I said D... I have wasted WAY to many hours on this process. I have seen some beautiful work done with masking, and it is pleasure to see.
However,,, for me there is NO apparent or obvious solution... it is time for me to move on.
I dont know what else to say.... I have looked at, and read SO many offers of a solution... it just doesn't work for me. I will say again, This is a great thread for anyone who can learn from it. I am just NOT one such person.

Really not a lot to understand, black covers up, white reveals, that's pretty much it, simple to me!

And this is why I have come to an impasse... and why I quit masking. I tried again today for the LAST time!!

I understand what masking does. I apparently am not able to comprehend the process.
To the point. I select a photo - I make a duplicate layer - I click on the mask symbol in the layers palette - I hide all layers except the mask layer- I select black or white - I select a brush - I brush.
AND THERE IT ENDS. Final result.... NOTHING. Nothing reveals - nothing conceals.
I get zero result.
End game here - if you guys can make it work, I am very happy for you. I cannot... it is as simple as that. I quit on masks, I have wasted hundreds of hours coming back to this process again and again.
There is only so many times I can flog a dead horse. My brain is that dead horse... it is not going to get up now, or tomorrow, or next week.
I give up.... I am moving on without masks.
