This is very cool. Don’t need one, yet, but know someone who could benefit from this. Thank you, and happy shooting.

I don’t have a specific lens recommendation but rather an observation. Going to Iceland you are going to use this lens for landscapes. Few landscape photographers shoot wide open. Depth of field is our friend, and to achieve it, f8-f11 are better choices. If you are concerned about low light, you may want to take a light weight travel tripod for longer exposures.

Fast lenses are expensive lenses. There are plenty of great wide angles out there at f3.5-f4 that would suit your needs, and still allow you to keep both kidneys.

Yes Sir, Yellowstone Falls is on our list. I will be taking both long (200-500mm 5.6 and Sigma 150mm-600mm) lenses, tripod with gimbal. Thanks for your response.

You may want to consider getting a 1.4 teleconverter for either of your long lenses. I often shoot with the equivalent of an 800m and still find it is not enough.

As you are staying in Gardner, you w have easy access to the Lamar Valley which is a must for any wildlife photographer. You could spend days there and not be disappointed. Yellowstone Falls is a must as well for the landscape photographer in you. The longer the lens the better. I would also take a tripod with a gimbal head. Drive the “Grand Loop”, wildlife is everywhere. Don’t pet the fluffy cows.

I grew up in Los Angeles. Just because the Times says something, that doesn’t make it true.

Here is the dilemma. This certainly is a fine camera that can get the job done. However, this does not address the ethical dilemmas this poses.

We should get away from the notion that DSLRs are good starter cameras for young people. The DSLR format is dead. We are not doing young people a service getting them into cameras that have nothing to do what photography is now and will be in the future.

I disagree. The fundamentals of photography don’t change between DSLR’s and Mirrorless. I have both and use them regularly. The Nikon D800e is a great camera and has all the tools to help a young person learn photography.

I received my Brownie Hawkeye from my parents in the late 1950’s. I used it for many years photographing Yosemite and other favorite places. I still do a lot of photography in Yosemite and other parks in the west, but I now use a Nikon Z7. Sadly, most of my early photos have been lost in time, but I still have my Brownie Hawkeye

LOL - the market, rather than UHH, says people prefer Canon digital cameras at a rate of 4.7 Canons to every 2.2 Sony to 1.8 Nikon.

But certainly, just reading the UHH squawk box, one would think the numbers are 8 Nikons to 1 each of Sony and Canon.

When I was a kid I noticed there were a lot more VW Beatles on the road then there were Corvettes.

Different heads for different uses. Ball heads are hard to control with heavy lenses. Much better off with a gimbal or fluid head. If cost is an issue just remember, eBay is our friend. I have found some really good RRS deals there over the years. Due diligence is the key to a good deal.

I have this ball head as well as the next size down. Both are very good is heavy. With your camera and lens setup, the 40 may be sufficient. To a great degree the choice of tripod heads is more a matter of what you will be doing with it. For wildlife, I would not use a ball head, I would look for a gimbal or fluid head. Personally, I would put an L bracket on the camera body and get a RRS replacement foot for the lens if it has a collar.

Just got back from Santa Fe, everything is open. We had a great time. If you plan to go to Tent Rocks, get there early as there is limited parking. Puya Cliffs is amazing. Call in advance for hours as their website is currently incorrect. Grab a meal at The Shed, great New Mexican food.

A quick internet search suggests it was made by Ricoh for their screw mount cameras.
