I just purchased a Nikon D500 camera from KEH camera that looks like new. A friend recommended this camera and KEH. I want to get a back up battery. Any recommendations for off brand batteries, other than Nikon or should I stay with the Nikon battery?? Thank you.

I always try to use Nikon OEM when available. Always have great results.

I have a Canon 5D Mark ii with the 24-105L lens and wonder if it makes sense to get a 2X extender for my trip to Spain. I also have an older Canon 75-300 lens but don't want to carry both. Concerned about quality with the extender and also whether a good one exists that fits my camera. (Thanks, Canon...) Also considered a used Canon 55-200, but Rockwell said that my camera couldn't handle the color problems.
Appreciate your help and snark,
Bill from Somerville MA (long time lurker)

When I’m on vacation I take my Nikon P&S. Very nice images, no dragging gear and weight, no changing lenses, 22x zoom, fits in my pocket, fantastic colors.

Totally agree. Half of my lenses are AF and AFD and most of my cameras are screw drive with great results. But I don’t use them with my D3400 since I prefer to not do manual focus.

I have asked myself this recently and I am reading a book that among other things, promises to “ and finish with how to find your purpose in photography.”

That is a bold claim and something I have asked myself more than once. There is no single answer of course, because it is subjective subject.

So I am curious, what do readers here say in response to “What is your purpose in photography?“

To preserve memories of life events that may never be repeated in the same form. Plus: It’s fun.

There hasn't been much discussion lately about true pocket cameras. (Ones you can actually slip into a front pocket or cargo pants side pocket.) I know cell phones have encroached in this domain, but I curious if hoggers have a preference as to currently offered models and which one is the best.

I carry my Nikon S9600 pocket camera in my car to use when needed. 16mp and very nice images.

I bought a D3500 bundle (18-55 VR, 55-300 Non VR), but returned it; the Ad showed both lenses with VR. That was an issue because the D3XXX & 5XXX have No VR in the body, so VR lenses are needed for stable zoom reach.
I upgraded to a D5300, Nikon 35mm prime & 55-200 VR, & a Tamron 18-400 VR.
I Rarely shoot in AUTO mode; I use A, S, or P mode, depending upon the scene or desired effect. There was a learning curve jumping from SLR to DSLR and the D3XXX & D5XXX are menu driven for adjustments, which can be irritating.
For a light, APSC sensor 24MP camera, the results you can achieve, with some skill, are quite impressive!

My d3400 with the right lenses produces excellent results even with only one wheel.

Have you noticed that it's getting more difficult to sign into many sites? The ID and password are no longer enough. They have to send a code, get answers to questions, or also sign into Google. I don't like this, especially when I have to find my cell phone, turn it on, wait for it to boot, and then look for the code.

I just signed into Ancestry to see more distant relatives, and I had to follow that up with a sign-in to Google.

And then too many failed attempts locks you out indefinitely.

But, look at how you're wasting your time and the community's. The camera is now 15+ years old. The thread is more than 11 years old. And the OP hasn't participated with the community since May 2021. There's no worth to this discussion to anyone.

You are always entitled to your opinion but you cannot determine who is wasting your time for everyone else. If the thread does not meet your high standards maybe you need to do some self evaluation or to just not respond. Your opinion is respected on this site but you are not always respectful of others. Also a way to attract new subscribers.

Indeed a high end old camera is better for beginner to learn than the low end current model.

Of course in many cases. Not everyone can handle a learning curve from high end old or new cameras or (even wants to.)

CHG_Canon is right. The camera is completely obsolete and the price is too high for what you would be getting. The beginner would get better photos with a phone, so rather than encouraging the beginner to advance in photography the camera would be a setback from what he or she already has.

Agreed that the price was too high but IMHO these older cameras do not represent a setback for a beginner to advance in photography. Not everyone has deep pockets and much experience can be gained thru using them. They represent a lot of value for the money spent.

What else were you expecting from an old thread? There is a lot of interest in the older DSLRs. Nothing wrong with resurrecting old posts.

I didn't ask why. I asked how? Did you do a search for old threads?

Yes, Use the search function in the header and type in D100 or anything else of interest. If it was posted in UHH it will be there.

To Ronpier. How did you find this thread????

Sometimes we just need to see where we came from in order to see where we are going.
