I am taking family on an Alaska 7 day cruise in September. It ends in Seward and we are planning to stay a few extra days. My question is, photographically should be stay in Seward to take the coastal cruise or take the train to Denali? We can only stay an extra 2-3 days, so we can't do both.

Personally, I would take the boat tour of Kenai Peninsula which was fabulous. Denali, in my humble opinion, wasn't that great.

Many years ago I had the great experience of attending an Ansel Adams workshop. I studied all his books and over the years, applied much of the Zone Syste to my commercial photography.

Congratulations on your Hasselblad purchase- I used the entire system for decades- it is a fine precision instrument.

If you have no basic knowledge of film photography you will be operating at a disadvantage as you are attempting to tackle the Zone System. Before venturing into that system, you should have a basic foundation in film process and printing techniques. If you start with an easily and currently obtainable black-and-white roll film such as (for example) Kodak Tri-X, there's a recommended, IOS rating (400), and a prescribed processing procedure as to chemistry, time, temperature, etc. The Zons system entails various changes in the standardized exposure/processig relationship dependg on the effect you are attempting to achieve in any given situation. Greyscale and gradations are another important component,

The system was originally designed to be used with SHEET film or CUT film where each sheet of film could be individually exposed and processed whereas with 120-roll film, all 12 exposures would need to be exposed and processed in the same manner.

Certin aspects of the so-called exposure triangle still apply but it is not mentioned in the original literature because the system calls for testing and establishing your own film sensitivity standards (ISO) for your gear and shootg style. The film process requires particular techniques such as pre-soaking, and extremely careful temperature control. Very basically, the is a lot of overexposure and underdevelopment to decrease contrast and underexposure and overdevelopment to increase contrast.

Makig prints on an analog enlarger is in itself an art form. There are papers of various contrast and total charistics, various developers, stop baths, fixers, hypo eliminators, and careful washing and drying procedures.

Certain Zone System principles can be applied to digital photography but the original system is film/analog, chemistry-based.

An analogy- You purchased a Hasselblad- it is like a beginning piano student purchasing a Steinway Grand Piano. The problem is, that the student can not sit down and play Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerti N0. 3 without first learning the scales, techniques, and lots of practice.

Alright! It ain't rocket science or nuclear physics- but it takes some doing!

This is one of the best responses I've seen on this forum on any topic. Well done.

I've been using them (polarizer and NDs) for 4+ years, top notch filters. Worth the money.

My experience with the standard Medicare covered lens with my cataract surgery has been outstanding. I've been wearing glasses since I was 13-14 for near sightedness in both eyes and astigmatism in my left eye. After surgery, no more glasses required except the cheap reading glasses you can buy at any pharmacy. Not to mention, the surgery was easy peasy. I was quite apprehensive like everybody about having someone muck around with my eyes but it turned out to be not a big deal at all. No discomfort and it took no time at all.

Good luck.

I would appreciate input on what Mac laptop to purchase. I have always shied away from them but after my last Dell purchase less than 2 yrs ago and output of $1100.00 for upgrade of storage ect., I have decided not to get another as I have had it crash and repaired too many times this year.
Being a large frame camera photographer, I am interested in what model Mac you use or suggest.
Thanks for the input.

I use a MacBook Pro, expensive yes, but I have not had one single problem with this computer in 5 years. Not to mention with the whole Apple ecosytem -- Iphone and Ipad all works seamlessly together and everything is shared.

No muss, no fuss. I have 32GB of Ram and 1 TB hard drive and use Luminar for post processing.

I just noticed you are located in North Texas. One of the other members in the Plano area reported a good report of his service. I suspect by your attitude that you are not a real Texan and probably a transplant from one of the screwed up states. If so, please go back. You bring Texas and us native Texans a bad smell.
Most sincerely;
bruce.

Wow. Pretty mean if I may say so and just because I don't like the USPS. I heard people were nicer in Texas except maybe one.

Not every American owns a computer, and has access to e-mail.
The government—federal, state, local, relies on the Postal Service to deliver critical, time-sensitive, verifiable information, of all types, to those unfortunate people. Businesses as well.
How short-sighted can one man be?

You sound like the people who lamented the end of the horse and buggy when the automobile arrived on the scene.

Even the government tries to use digital media. How many people file their taxes on line? Sorry, the world is changing and either the USPS adapts or dies.

By the way, did you ever notice how many of those poor unfortunate people have cell phones?

I'm going to disagree with just about every thing on this thread. My experience in North Texas has not been that great and I'm pretty sure I won't miss them when/if they are gone. 90% of what I get in the mail goes straight to the recycling can and the other ten percent could be accomplished by email.

The USPS is a dinosaur and will probably go the way of magazines and newspapers if it just sticks to mail. Delivering packages is their only hope for a raison d'etre.

I have used Printique, part of Adorama, a few times and I've always been happy with the books. Depending on your choices you can get thick pages with a real quality feel, different backgrounds for the pages, various kinds of covers, and even a presentation box. I'm not a digitally proficient person but I have figured out their software and find it pretty easy to use. If I do another book it will be with them.

I've been very satisfied with the two books I've done with Printique. Excellent company.

Nice photograph. I agree with someone else on this thread that it does have a bit of a blue overcast to it.
