Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I found the rule of 500 just after my last ranch shoot, but haven’t had a chance to test it yet. I’m keeping a running log of all your advice. If I get anything decent I’ll post.

I have a headlamp that is dimmable, but without red light. What’s the purpose of the red light?

Yeah, I had a Nikkor 105 Macro, because I left my wide angle back in Dallas. Thanks for the input.

I am just getting into night photography. Reading a lot on it in the David Busch, D850 book. Any tips/tricks I need to keep in mind, especially when bracketing and any HDR info would be greatly appreciated. I will be in Ft. Davis for a few nights and then down to Terlingua. The photo I have attached is one of my early attempts at stars down on our S. Texas ranch.
ISO 3200/f2.8/about 15 seconds on the D850/105macro.
Thanks.
Reg

I won’t do business with them again. They called me after the sale, wanted to upsell me and lied regarding their offer. I’m sticking with B&H, even if they are higher.

I just received my Nikon 2.8/70–200 MM lens back from APS. I was nervous about sending out my trusted old lens for repair when I had never used APS before. It came back in excellent shape with all of its many problems fixed perfectly. APS couldn't have done a better job.

Thanks! I just signed off with APS to have my old NIKKOR AF-S 70–200 VR F2.8 repaired. That lens has been with me all around the world. Can't wait to get it back in good working order!

Welcome Reg! I'm a new resident of Knox - Henderson and find Dallas an interesting architectural candy store. Coffee sometime?

Thanks for the kind invitation. We're just starting a new semester, so need to wait for the dust to settle a bit. Perhaps in a few weeks? There's a Starbucks on Gaston down close to DTS. Welcome to Dallas.

Places like 42nd St, Abe of Maine, etc. state they have a US warranty, but this is NOT a manufacturer warranty and most likely a low price means gray market so official US importers will not cover the camera. It is their own and the repair shop could be anyone. If you decide you want refurb, Cameta extends the 90-day manufacturer warranty to 1 yr and they use Mack Camera to do the work (excellent repair facility for all brands).
A lot of folks do buy gray market but you are taking a chance. Also a lot of these low cost resellers try to sell you accessories at an inflated price (batteries, filters) that you can often get as part of a bundle from Adorama, B&H and Cameta.
Final thought- before you buy online, call the store and see what kind of bundle the store can offer. As I said, if you buy new, then the store cannot play with the MSRP, but they can build a bundle (i.e. extra battery, filter, etc.) that can make a very attractive offer. Ex: Peter at Cameta has been very "flexible" in helping me to put together packages when I bought my Nikon cameras.
Places like 42nd St, Abe of Maine, etc. state they... (show quote)

Thanks so much. Very helpful.

I've never heard of them.
Have you done an internet search on them for information or comments?

Yes. Mixed bag, but mostly positive. They are fairly new.

Stick with ABC for new or refurb or for used, KEH. They are honest, solid companies that back up what they sell. Of course, if there is a good photo shop near you, then by all means see them first. The major manufacturers all require that the price for new is fixed, but you can see what kind of package they can do.
There is always the refurb route, but again highly recommend you stick with the same list of stores.

Good luck!

Thanks. I haven't used ABC or KEH. Sorry for ignorance here. Are those the initials for a company name, or are those the actual names of the companies?

I'm in the market for a Nikon D750. I noticed a website that I hadn't seen before with a great price, but I'm suspicious that it might be a scam. Has anyone ordered from JetCameras.com? Appreciate your response. Reg

I used to teach an AV course years ago, but have handed it off to those much more proficient and gifted in editing and studio work than I. I love the idea of this forum, and look forward to reading and perhaps contributing from time to time. I also have a blog -- www.WordShaper.net in case you're interested in the arts in general and stories of my exploits :-)
