Besides my essential tremor, which makes it hard for me to hold and stabilize a cell phone camera, I find another drawback when shooting out of doors: the glare on the screen prevents me from seeing and properly framing my intended image. Think I will stick to my DSLR and save the Android camera for casual indoor snaps.

Some phones have stabilization, if that's holding you back. I agree with you about the screen being a problem in bright light. It's also very hard to read a book on the screen at the beach.

Exactly right. Good points. I had been thinking about controlling depth of field. At least with a DSLR you can get shallow depth of field for portrait effect. Let's see a phone do what a DSLR or mirrorless can do with an 85mm f/1.4 lens.

Iphone has portrait mode as well as an short telephoto

These are always entertaining threads.

When I buy a car I don't look for the one that does everything, but I do look for the one that does everything I want/need.

I look at software the same way. I don't need a package that does everything, just one that does what I need.

I'm pretty sure based on what I read in the forums and images I see that a good percentage of folks never learn 10% of whatever software they are using. Buying the "best" software, like buying the "best" camera, doesn't make your images better.

I wear glasses and went from the D3300 to the D7500 and have no regrets. The photos out of the D7500 blow away the D3300 using the lens that I had from the D3300. I had also considered the D500 but decided I didn't need the extra zoom points or extra weight. The weight was the deciding factor.

Thanks for the reply. I should just try to use one first.

I have been thinking of getting either one of these cameras as a replacement for my 3100. I wear glasses and the thing holding me back is the low eye point. Otherwise, I would probably get the 7500. I don't have a second memory slot now, have never needed it. I think the actual gains offset the hypothetical loss of not having a second card slot.

Game changer.
One method no one mentioned is to focus using BBF and then take finger off and reframe on a still subjext and when you shoot, the camera does not refocus. You can reframe in rapid succession without needing to move the focus point. If you use shutter button for focus, you would need to move the focus point

In liveview and face tracking this is not an issue of course....mirrorless cameras ditto.

When I use BBF and AF-C to focus, but release the button to recompose, the shutter frequently does not fire. Am I missing something?
The camera is a D3100.

I have not seen any mention of what focus point areas are best with AF-C, especially for moving subjects. Any thoughts?

Under exposing in any format will enhance the noise*. Over exposure will reduce the noise - IF done properly (ETTR/EBTR) -. Note the under or over exposure does not mean blowing either.

I personally have found that with the newer crop of cameras (D500 and D850) underexposure is less a noise issue than before as with the new invariant sensor technology we need to re-think exposure as a whole.

Newer cameras (Sony/Nikon among others) also have an incredible DR and to challenge one on that aspect is becoming much harder so ETTR and EBTR seems to be less relevant as time passes.

I still have the Canon F1 I bought in '73. I also have the speed finder which became a permanent fixture. Unlike the contemporary Nikon F, the viewfinder could be changed without losing the metering.

Yes, just give me a digital Nikon FM. Nicest, most affordable, simplest to use, compact, sturdy. I still have it. It still works - even without a battery! Just stick an FF sensor in it, and let me use all my old but good manual focus lenses on it. Leave the split prism manual focus screen just as it was - it worked just fine. and the manual metering - worked fine too - nice big needle on the left side of the screen. Just stick an ISO dial on it. Why won't someone make these? Why wouldn't they sell? Are we evolved to such a helpless state that we need to have everything done robotically for us?
