I am a Nikon shooter and was excited to put the Tamron z 150-500mm lens on my z50. I was ready to do more wildlife and birds in flight photography until I spent some time with this beautiful beast….it is too darn heavy for me to hold still and I am not inclined to lug a tripod around when I get the urge to shoot some wildlife when I am close to nature. At 75 I admit I am not as strong as I’d like and holding that lens isn’t getting easier.

So I am returning it to Adorama today and exchanging it for the Sony cyber shot RX10 IV. I guess a bridge camera isn’t so bad….(right?)…..and it sure will make my sometimes forays into nature a little easier. I just hope I don’t have pangs of regret and envy when I encounter folks with those big, beautiful telephoto lens in the field.🥹
I am a Nikon shooter and was excited to put the Ta... (show quote)

Two years ago I went on an Alaskan cruise and bought a Sony RX10iv a few months before to take with me because of medical issue with an ankle. I needed the few months ahead of time to really learn how to use that camera. I bought a book by Alexander White that was a great help. The Sony worked superbly. No, I probably can't get the really great enlargements from some of the photos that I took that I could from my Nikon and its long lens but I got great memory pics without the effort of lugging around a lot of gear. I have kept all of my gear and the Sony serves as an additional unit to use when I need to carry light. I will use it, along with my Nikons and long lenses during the solar eclipse this coming April. It is a good addition to but not a replacement for what I already have. By the way, I'm a 10 years older than you and still lug around the big stuff but always use it on a tripod or monopod.

I have the Nikkor 24-85 and can't seem to get it calibrated to my D7200 to give sharp pictures. Thinking of replacing it with the Nikkor 16-85 f/3.5-5.6. Any thoughts? I have read that the 16-85 is a very sharp lens.

I had the 16-85 and wore it out over a good many years. I don't think Nikon makes it anymore. I replaced it with a Nikkor 16-80 which has worked out well for me for a walking around lens when I don't need a longer lens.

As I have reached 80, I find my R5 and RF100-500mm, which I like very much are too heavy for me to carry, left and hold. I am thinking about Switching to Sony with the 200-600mm, not sure which camera. Any thoughts?

When I reached 83 I decided that I needed a midweight bridge camera to carry around. I had a Nikon D7100 and a D500 along with a nice assortment of Nikkor lenses including a 70-200 and 200-500 but they were getting heavy to lug around for every day use. I kept all the lenses, the D500 and sold the D7100 and bought a Sony RX10 model IV. It is easy for me to carry around and shoot and I still have the Nikon D500 and lenses for when I want to use the big stuff for a planned shoot. It's working out well for me to use both types of setups.

Thanks for the post. I am in Grand Prairie and getting my D300 and Lumiz FZ300 ready for it.
Keep us posted.

I'm in Mansfield and used a D300s for the 2016 eclipse here. I ended up reclining in a lawn chair and hand holding for that one.

Thanks for the suggestions. My D500 has an articulated LCD that helps. One of the problems is that at the sun is so bright during that time of day it washes out the picture on the screen. I am experimenting with a black cloth to lessen the washout effect and am practicing already.

The October,2023 annular eclipse will only be a partial eclipse in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The annular part will not be visible here but will be visible in west and southwest Texas. The April, 2024 eclipse will be a full eclipse in the DFW area. I am also practicing and find it hard to acquire an image when the sun is directly overhead. I'm using a D500, a Nikkor 200-500, a special filter that I used in 2016 for that eclipse. The camera is mounted on a very sturdy tripod and I am using a Benro geared head. I will be in the Texas Hill country for the full effect of the October eclipse. Anybody have any suggestions about how to acquire an image of the overhead sun during an eclipse?

I also have this camera and in reviewing both the Sony manual and Alexander White's book they emphasize that you should push the center button on the control wheel to save after setting your info.

The "Lens" app on my cell phone identifies these as either 1987 or 1988 Avanti II models, possibly built using some parts from Ford.

I have done some 10 - 20 minute long segments with no problem but did not have all the attachments that you plan to use, just a mic and a tripod.

When I use one it is my Safari vest from Cabela's. It's not really specific to anything but has lots of big pockets that us Velcro type closures, is comfortable and was about half the cost of a similar vest that was supposed to be specific for photography.

I know the area well. Thanks for posting. My wife grew up there and her dad operated a custom butcher shop meat locker plant there for many years. We go back as often as we can. They do have beautiful sunsets.

I have version 3.7.0 and just used it with no problem. I'm running it in W10. I have Sharpen and Gigapixel as well and use them weekly. Just received a notice from Topaz that an upgrade is available for Gigapixel. They indicate that they will continue to support each program individually.

There are mountain ranges in west Texas with peaks over 8,000 feet. There is a wonderful gulf shoreline that has sandy beaches that stretches for over a hundred miles. There is a heavily forested east Texas area full of lakes. There are grassy rolling plains and a large dessert area. There are two national parks that are very scenic. There is an abundance of wildlife and a great variety of birds. I have never lacked for photo ops in this state.

There are many good suggestions already listed. If you do have time for a few days in the western part of the state consider headquartering in or around Alpine, Texas. Take a trip to Fort Davis and from there to the world famous McDonald Observatory. Call ahead and make reservations for one of their night sessions. You will be amazed at how many stars you can see in that dark sky there. Alpine is also a good HQ for visiting Big Bend National Park. The park is where "God put all the left over parts after creating the world." The park is huge but has a good, paved road through it that will allow you to see many varied sights. I have lived in Texas for the last 48 years and have traveled much of the free world on business and for pleasure. I can assure you that you will feel welcomed here and will have an overwhelming number of interesting things to do. I live in the Fort Worth area, which is north central Texas, and would welcome the opportunity to be your guide if your travels bring to this part of Texas. We have an interesting "cowboy" culture here as well as some sophisticated museums. Hope these comments are useful for you.

I took the RX10 iv with me on an Alaskan trip lasting 20 days last year because I didn't want to carry my DSLR and 3 lens. In general, I was very happy with it, its sharpness and its reach. The only time I wished for my dslr was in a few low light situations going after moving animals. The autofocus was a little slow in those situations. I made prints as large as 13 x 19 from several of the shots and they were great. I also cropped several pics and that worked out well. There was a long learning curve with that camera for me. I shot it for several months prior to the trip and still was learning more about it the first couple of days on the trip. I was very happy with it and would do it again.
