This fellow was sitting outside my window on top of a feeder. The blue jays were making bomb runs on him. Not sure if he is a Merlin falcon or Cooper's hawk. By the size I think it is a hawk. The photo was shot thru a window and screen with a Sony RX 100VII. I was surprised that the screen was not visible in the photo, at least not to me.

Great shot.

First look indicates a probable immature Coopers Hawk but without seeing the tail tip (which should be a wide white band with rounded end) there is a slight possibility of a Sharp-shinned Hawk (small white band with squared end).

- Location - even though ranges overlap barely. They may interbreed in overlapped ranges. Black-capped prefer higher elevations. Carolina prefer valleys & foothills.
- Voice - Black-capped call is low & slow. Carolina is high & fast.
- Physical appearance - broad white edges on wing more apparent on Black-capped. Tails usually level or higher. Carolina the tail is held level or lower.

Bottom line, it is very difficult to tell the difference fro a photo only without the location of the photo.

The immature Cooper's Hawk and immature Northern Gosehawk look very similar. The Goshawk is about 20% larger and the eyebrow (supercilium) is light and flaring behind the eye. Their ranges overlap in Canada, the northern USA and Rockies. The eyebrow of this specimen isn't particularly apparent. Their tail feathers feature similar pattern and relative length. I'm not sure but I'd guess Cooper's. Maybe others want to weigh in. Either way, it's a very attractive shot.

I have to agree with the juvenile Cooper's Hawk selection. I would also add the this bird does not have the more pointed tail of the Northern Goshawk compared to the bird in the photo. Still a wonderful capture.

- Hello! Gordon's pizza?
- No sir, this is Google's pizza.
- Did I dial a wrong number?
- No sir, Google bought the business.
- OK. Can you take my order please.
- Well sir, do you want the usual?
- The usual? You know me?
- According to your caller ID, in the last 12 times you ordered pizza with extra cheese, pepperoni and thick crust.
- Okay! That sounds like it…
- May I suggest to you this time - ricotta, spinach and dry tomato?
- No, I hate vegetables!
- But your cholesterol is high.
- How do you know?
- Through the subscribers guide. We have the results of your blood tests for the last five years.
- Okay, but I do not want this pizza, I already take medicine.
- You have not taken the medicine regularly. 4 months ago, you only purchased a box of 30 tablets at Discount Pharmaceuticals.
- I bought more from another pharmacy.
- It's not showing on your credit card.
- I paid cash.
- But you did not withdraw that much cash according to your bank statement.
- I have another source of cash.
- This is not showing on your last tax return. So you got it from undeclared income source?
- WHAT THE HELL? Enough! I'm sick of Google, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp. I'm going to an Island without internet, where there is no cell phone line and no one to spy on me.
- I understand sir, but you need to renew your passport as it expired 5 weeks ago.

First quick look and may agree with you on a juvenile Coopers Hawk due to your San Fran area location. However do not overlook the possibility of a Sharp-shinned Hawk due to the short tail (though it appears split - not rounded or squared) white undertail coverlets and pale eyebrow. Lean towards Coopers...but.

Thanks for the replies and information. I like the rubber lens hood idea. I was not familiar with that. The reason for my question was that back in March I had a black bear sow and 2 cubs climb up a back deck 14 foot column to get at the bird feeders that I have mounted off my deck railing. It was around 2:30 am when I heard them pulling at the feeders. Got out of bed, turned on the bedroom deck light which did not scare them away. Grabbed my camera and started shooting at f5.6 hoping to catch enough light with the deck lamps. A big mistake because all the shots included my reflection along with the subjects. I therefore missed a great opportunity and wound up having to delete the shots.
I also usually have to shoot through other deck windows to get bird photos. I usually shoot from f9 to f16 with some reasonable success. However, when I move towards the windows, my movement usually scares them away. However, it is still worth the try with the rubber lens hood.
Thanks again for all the help.

Is there a "best" f stop to use when you have to shoot your subject through single pane or double pane glass?
