Ring lights are not a great choice but if that is what you have... Position them above and below the subject. Do a practice shot on someone wearing glasses and adjust the lights higher and lower to get them out of the family of angles that will reflect the light onto the glass's lenses. Another way of using them is to aim them away from the subject and use a white reflector to aim the reflected light onto your subject (yes a rather awkward setup). If they are typical ring lights, they are not putting out a lot of light, so they need to be rather close, or you need to adjust your shutter speed/aperture to let in more light. Alternatively, adjust the ISO to 1500 or more. Yes, they will start to get grainy, but you are not producing art photos here, just ID's. Alternatively use both lights high and about 45 degrees to each side and use a white reflector under them to brighten up the lower face and neck area. Sounds like a good project, wish I coud get involved. Good luck and let us know how you worked it out.

I have a Canon R7, and am thinking about adding a flash. I've been looking at the Godox V860 IIIc and the Yongnuo 600 EX-RT II. I'd also consider a Canon flash, such as the EL-5, but they're a good deal pricier than third-party flashes. However, I'm finding a lot of confusing info and reviews on the web, and I would welcome member's experiences in using flash on the R-series Canons. Here's some of the contradictory info:

- Some users say they get an ERR70 with the Godox, others don't.
- One review of the Canon El-5 says the AD-E1 shoe adapter is necessary, others don't mention it.
- The AD-E1 adapter provides weatherproofing and the ability to mount other devices like microphones. However, one article said it was needed for "full functionality," and mentioned it was needed for in-camera controls like flash exposure compensation. I don't know if that's true.
- Yongnuo highly rated for function but poorly rated for durability.

So, do you have a flash that's fully functional on your Canon R series? Any insight on the other questions?

Thanks,

Dan

I would look into the Westcott fj80 flash. I have observed this in use and it is a viable alternative to your choices. I have the fj400 strobes and can tell you that Westcott has superb customer service. I never had a problem with my strobes, but did pepper them with a lot of questions and every time they were very helpful. https://www.fjwestcott.com/products/fj80-se-m-universal-80ws-speedlight

the first is a WWII Japanese Mosin-Nagant rifle cartridge, 7.62mm x 54 or thereabouts. The second, I don't know.

I did a similar voyage on Viking Ocean Cruises, Bergen to Nordkapp then to Scotland and London to end. This was 2019 last week of June, first week of July. The weather was not kind to us as we were under cloudy and rainy skies for much of the trip. We missed the spectacular scenery in the Lofoten islands (a must-see location on such a voyage) and Nordkapp had better visibility but was miserably cold, rain and high winds. I would guess we just got bad luck but if I were to do it again, I'd recommend more toward the end of July. You would still get the long days but maybe the longer heating period might clear the skies for you.

You're on the right track. Rather than watching random YouTube videos, pick an instructor and follow straight through.

Lynda.com gives you a month for free. Whoops! Lynda.com is now Linkedin Learning.

I have mentioned this in a previous post. Many local library systems offer patrons free at home access to Linkd-In Learning. I have taken over 60 hours of courses on many subjects and have found the content, instructors and production standards to be very high. They update the offerings on a regular basis. You cannot beat the price and convenience.

Linkd-In Learning is often available online free through your local library system. I have used it extensively both for photo tutorials and tutorials in my professional field. With my library card it is all completely free. Best part, it is all very well produced and presented. This was formerly Lynda Learning.

Linked-In Learning (Formerly Lynda) has a bunch of photo and photo processing learning modules. You can get them free online through your local library. You just need a library card. Because the modules are curated by Linkd-In, the quality of material and the production values are fairly high. I have 'attended' several of them and have not been disappointed. They range from complete novice to journeyman level skills. I urge all to check it out.

as soon as you mentioned the red dots in your viewfinder that keyed me to your solution. Not only shoot full manual as far as aperture and shutter speed, turn off your autofocus and focus manually at the hyperfocal point or at the miniature you want in sharp focus. and, equally important, use a sturdy tripod.

I'm all about presets, but in my case, I trigger things like the lens and camera profile and enable my own noise and sharpening settings. I'm more about automation than predetermined outcomes.

I get that. I find that in my product photos, I generally will apply very modest changes to compensate for the lighting. Our production is so fast paced that adjusting lighting and fine-tuning exposure between shots, is just not possible. The occasional use of presets and brushes in post-processing just was cost effective, especially in LR where I can apply a preset to any number of photos with just two or three mouse clicks.

Does PS allow for presets, or is that an LR-only option?

I'm not up on the currents of the current subscription software, but it seems you're mixing options between the two softwares. For LR presets, they're really not worth the money, even the free ones. They don't have any 'intelligence' in a way that customizes / considers the content of the source image. Rather, they just move the many and various LR sliders in the Develop model to preset positions. You can do that yourself.

Yes, LR does support brushes. This feature has become more robust in the last year of updates. And, yes one can develop their own as I did with presents. The idea was to save a lot of time in trial and error.

Ok, I am not asking for anything here, just posing a question, opening a discussion. SOOC hardliners, please skip this post.

I see ads for collections of brushes and presets for both Light Room and Photo Shop, often dramatically "discounted." I am sure they are ok and handy for working on our photos. I use brushes occasionally in my product photos. While I have not made any brushes of my own, I have saved about ten global presets.

My question is this. Would UHH users be interested in sharing their brushes with each other, or am I opening up a big can of worms by merely suggesting this? I would not encourage anyone to share brushes that are somehow copyrighted or owned by a commercial entity, just ones "home made."

So here is the unfortunate problem I foresee in our modern day and age: A hundred UHH users will submit great and useful brushes and one jerk will submit a brush or set with malware attached. As said in the opening, I am not seeking anything here other than opening a discussion of sharing brushes and presets. What say you???

Fascinating discussion of one of our most used tools. This is what Mole Richardson calls a softbox. It had four halogen (or similar) very hot lights in the lower section that cast light into the hard body clamshell area. The old fat fellow is about 5'6" to the peak of the hat. We actually sold this same light in two separate auctions, the original buyer subsequently sold his business, hence the second sale). I used the light to shoot all the product shots in the original auction for two reasons. 1. It gives out massive amounts of light and we only used one of the lamps. 2. It kicks out a massive amount of heat which we enjoyed in the unheated cavernous studio (a 2 wall 16' high cyclorama) during a very cold time of the year. Yes, it is as heavy as it looks.
