Zig has good suggestions

The overhead bins will hold a backpack sized item, as long at is is not too thick (think 7 inches or less). Your other option is under the seat in front of yo, which can fit a much thicker backpack (up to 12 inches. My backpack lives there on theses small planes, and it fits well. I don’t know how big your lens is, but I would think it would fit it was not attached to the body. You may need to compromise a bit on how much packing is around it and just treat it gently/carefully during this part of your trip.

As it is not my life nor events, I would not want to tell the OP not do do what he wants. As he mentioned a slide show, I suspect it is not just about the event but a “life milestones” in review as well But, something that long may not get looked at as much as something shorter.

What I really like about photo books is that it is easy, as has been pointed out, to put in notes and captions. Consider adding names of whom are in the photos, what the event was if not the surprise party (these two spring chickens are not getting younger!) and context. The annotated books will mean more in the long run.

Overall, we have had much more fun, and they have been enjoyed more than a traditional photo album

Great suggestion, didn't even think to ask if she might have a home studio. And again, these are tweens, so I need to be super cautious.

Actually, I meant in the studio she considers her home base, not necessarily her actually home

Sounds like you have gotten a lot of good advise. Have fun

Glad you are finding a path

Your dancer may be more comfortable in her home studio. You might contact the studio owner to see if you can come over early, check the space, and maybe shoot some test shots (maybe a release from the studio as well?). Figure out what works best

Sounds like a fun journey. Practice and enjoy

Hi

Directly, I have no experience in this area as I only shoot public spaces, but two comments

A) not a lawyer, but if you are shooting minors (and tweens were mentioned), I would think you many need a parent/guardian signature as well. I would also make sure at least one other adult is present when you are with the minor (sorry - I have a lot of youth protection training so am probably over cautious in this area)

B). We have several fantastic professionals in the forum whom shoot athletes (and dancers are athletes) and models, whom can also provide additional options for you (though Stardust did a great job already). There is a pro sub-forum. You might post you your question there as well

Good luck

Hi Thomas

first, Great shots. Truly exquisite (as is your norm!)

second. Thank you for the information on how the men’s success thus far in their WC impacts the Women’s team. I had this exact question this morning watching the updates on TV. For the sake of the both teams, let’s hope the men’s team makes it a bit further.

Thank you Steve.

If she agrees, we are likely heading to the 80D as the video is much better than the older models, and she does a lot with that. She asked for the 60D as that was what she used for the last year in school, but I suspect the 80D will be very similar to it. I think the two lens we have will get her going, and we/she can add to that if she continues to enjoy and use it.

No Joy on our one local camera shop. I have checked out the usual big used online shops we all use and their are 80D bodies available in the higher level conditions for mid $500 to low $600 at this time. Nothing I see currently active on UHH, but put a “WTB” out once she confirms her decision. All of the equipment I have has been bought new/refurb, and all but my D7200 has been from UHH. I will ask about the shutter count, and take that into account in pricing.

Thanks (Steve and all).

For starters it is Canon.

Dear Otis.

My apologies if my spelling of Canon offended your pedantic senses to the point you felt you needed to post a reply to all calling it out.

In my defense, I was writing quickly before leaving for work and had not had my morning coffee….. 😕

To all: thank you for the comments and recommendations. Quite helpful.

While she, like all teens, posts stills and video extensively from her cell phone, she wants something more. While she likes my Nikon D7200, she is also “afraid” to take it out much as she does not want to risk dropping, breaking or losing it. She knows how much I love that camera. Even with her relatively newer iphone, she does want to do more and likes editing RAW in LR, etc. If i can make a small investment, especially having two starter lenses to get her going, seems worthwhile to allow her to continue learning

Where I ended up. While I funneled all of this to her, my reading of reviews and comparisons (Thanks Paul), along with all of your comments, looks like the extra $$ to go to the 80D would likely be a good choice. AF, both photo and video, greatly improved. Native .mp4 capability. 24MP. the one all-around 26-135 we already have would be a good “walk-around” lens to start, and we can pick up a wider or macro lens if she wants.

So, thank you all for taking the time to post

hi Paul.

thank you for the quick and through reply, and including thoughts on these two lenses.

Is there a good “authoritative” site where I can send her to compare 60D vs 70D vs 80D?

As a 17 y.o., she doesn’t want to admit Dad could possibly know anything. 🤪

Hi

Looking for help from fellow hogs whom have experience with the Cannon product line, and in particular older used models. This is for my daughter. I am a Nikon shooter and am not well versed in “Cannon”

After taking a year long photography/videography course at school, she would like to continue to work on her craft(s). Both “modes” are important for her. In both, she is more focused on people/actors and some indoor and some outdoor. No sports, no landscapes, no birding. Maybe a bit of macro (eg-jewelry for sale on poshmark) and streetscapes, but that’s about it. 100% shared via social media, etc. Never prints, so I am not sure ultra high MP is needed.

She used in the class, and is comfortable with, the EOS 60D from Cannon. She has also tried a Cannon 40D and my Nikon D7200. Neither she liked as much.

So, thinking about the 60D for a Christmas present and would like opinions from those who know the Cannon line and older used models. Was hopeful that, if you all confirm the 60D is reasonable (OK, not a horrible..) choice, I can find one on the used market as people upgrade to mirrorless and look to unload their old equipment.

Two final notes.
A) She is 17, which means her focus (pun intended) can shift month to month. Therefore, I don’t want to go towards a brand new Camera or mirrorless (sorry Paul) as who knows what she will be into two years from now. If she continues and finds herself limited by equipment at that point, we can upgrade then.
B) One reason she is looking at the Cannon line is we have two inherited cannon lens from Grandma: a 28-135 and a 70-300. Is still need to understand compatibility, but if they are, this means just a 60D body would be needed.

All thoughts welcome. If there is another model other than the 60D you would recommend, please explain what features you think would make it better for her use.

Thank you in advance

Nice shots. I really like #4. While it is just a static shot, it conveys emotion and the hard work due to the scuffed up helmet. Nice
