I bought the Nikon D850 body late last year. I have a bunch of lenses, so all I had to pay for was the body. On a hunch I also bought a Sony alpha a6500 plus a few (inexpensive) lenses. The D850 is a terrific machine, but when I took it on a two week group vacation to the Rhine Valley I found its weight was very restricting. When you are in a group (not primarily photographers) it moves a little too fast to set up a tripod and in dark places, like cathedrals I had to brace myself against columns or walls to avoid camera shake. As to the Sony; I took it to New York City for some street photography with my grandchildren and it did a very respectable job, but not as good as the Nikon. Of course, the Sony is a crop sensor camera, so you get what you pay for. However, the light weight was much appreciated and I started thinking of selling all my Nikon equipment and go for the Sony 7r III full frame mirrorless. I went to the extent of renting one from Lensrentals with a medium range full frame zoom. It's a very nice camera but still not equal to the Nikon. Of course, I am inexperienced with the Sony, so it might be my fault.
To summarize, I am looking forward to the Nikon mirrorless full frame. They promised to make an adapter for F mount lenses so we don't have to rush out and immediately buy all new glass. I am assuming that the quality and capabilities will be on par with their full frame DSLR-s. I hope they will be able to make lenses for it that don't weigh a ton. I am in my eighties and lugging a lot of equipment around is getting a bit too much.

As a Delaware resident I appreciate seeing pictures from my home state.

This is a composite moon shot of five individual shots. I used D750, Tamron 150 - 600, f/13, shutter speed =1/1250, ISO=1800, hand held. Combined in Photomatix. Would have been better to use a tripod, but this is from my driveway and I only get a clear shot of the moon for a half hour or so because of the trees. I didn't have time to look for the tripod.

What was the equipment that you used? I was in Alaska two years ago in some of the same places and my shots don't look anywhere near as good as yours.

RAM is "remote access memory" and it comes on a circuit board, that fits in a slot inside your computer. Sometimes there are extra slots available so you can buy extra RAM. It is not hard to install this, but if you are not a computer guy, go to the Geek Squad, or some other computer servicing outfit and they will do it for you.

Are you asking for setting up your camera in "Manual Mode", or shooting "Hand Held"? The first is no different than any other mode, as long as you know what effect you want in your pictures. The second is a question of how steady you are in holding the camera, can you lean on something, can you steady your body so you reduce camera shake. I shoot hand held almost always, because I hate the burden of dragging a tripod with me when I am traveling, or walking on the streets of New York, or shooting my granddaughter's soccer games. I usually use a fast shutter speed to help me freeze the motion. In soccer and track I occasionally try panning, still hand held, it usually works well for me. For action shots I use the multi shot setting and shoot five to ten bursts. By the way I practice panning on cars on a busy highway near my house, that way I am ready for the somewhat slower soccer players.

I have the Tamron 18 - 400 mm f/3.5 - 6.3 Di II VC HLD zoom also. It might just be a typo, but you didn't indicate the f stop at the 400 mm end of the lens, which is 6.3, in other words the lens isn't 3.5 through its full range.
Other than that it is a great lens (speaking as an enthusiast, not a professional). As a matter of fact I am planning to use this lens on my Nikon D850 body, because I can set the Nikon to DX mode and I get a 600 mm reach this way. Some people are against this approach since one loses a lot of megapixels. However, I just bought the D850 and at the moment I don't have the cash to shell out for a full frame 600 mm lens. Also the Tamron lens is quite light.
Having said the above, I will eventually get a full frame long zoom to give my camera what it deserves.

I ordered my D850 at Best Buy for store pickup early this year. Three days later they had my camera, which I picked up at the nearest Best Buy location. I registered the body on the Nikon website and received a confirmation of this. I have to assume it is a legitimate product for US use. In any case it works as advertised and as described by some pros.

I often use auto WB and auto ISO, but manual shutter speed and manual aperture. Does this count as manual mode?
If I don't like the pic I will change WB or ISO manually.

As a frequent visitor to New York City, I can say with certainty that getting tickets in advance will make your experience multiple times better. Recently my teenage granddaughter and I visited the Empire State Building with pre-purchased VIP passes (it costs a few bucks). It was worth every penny. Same thing is true on the top of 30 Rock. By the way, you can get better shots of Central Park from 30 Rock than the ESB.

Some of the FX lenses cost as much as the camera body did. I can't shell out that much money all at once, even if the purists disagree I will use the lenses I do have. Didn't somebody once say: The best camera (and lens) is the one that you have with you. On that basis I will keep using my remaining DX lenses until I can afford the full frame ones everybody seems to cherish so much. By the way, my Tamron 18 - 400 mm lens takes pretty awesome closeups.

I have the Nikon 28 -300 Fx, the Nikon 24 -120 Fx, the Nikon 50 mm f/1.4 and the Nikon 85 mm f/1.8. I will soon be traveling in the Alps and cruising on the Rhine river. Two years ago we were in Denali in Alaska and the 300 mm was not enough to pull in the grizzlies and especially the snow white sheep that live way up in the mountains. I can't afford a really expensive lens right now, so I thought I do the best with what I have.

After much hesitation about the price I finally plunked down the money for a new Nikon D850 body. So far I am very happy with it, but I am a long way from exploring all of its features. I have a question that some of you might have faced: I still have some of my favorite DX lenses ( e.g. a Tamron 18 -400 mm zoom, which is very compact and light and pulls in distant objects similar to a much bigger FX zoom would). The D850 can be used in DX mode, but naturally one loses some of the megapixels by cropping the sensor. Does anybody know the size of the remaining sensor in terms of Mp-s? I don't think its the same as a 24 MP DX camera would have
