The diopter adjustment on my 80 D is not strong enough to compensate for my far sightedness. I need a +2 diopter. I could use reading glasses, but I don’t want the hassle of putting them on and off.

I would really like the device Canon used to sell to attach to the viewfinder. They still sell that device for full frame professional cameras but they don’t fit the 80 D.

I’ve searched the Internet and the Ugly Hedgehog archives for a Dioptric E and rubber frame Eb for my 80 D viewfinder and can’t find a source from which to purchase these items.

They are not available from Canon or from local camera stores in Eastern Idaho.

I recently had cataract surgery and changed from being nearsighted to far sighted.

The image in the viewfinder is blurry and I would like to avoid wearing reading glasses when looking through the viewfinder.

Does anyone know where I may purchase these items?

If you're talking about backcountry backpacking, not a single item on this list should be in you pack beyond 1 flashlight. Instead, get a pocket sized model you can keep in your front shorts pocket for easy reach and immediate access without removing your pack. I used a Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II on my 100 nights on the trail on the AT a few years ago. The camera captures in 20MP RAW so you can edit everything as desired when you get home. You can do 1-off conversions to JPEG and post from the motel when off the trail for a night. Just get a second battery and don't do image review / culling away from the motel and you might reach 2 weeks on just two batteries if you never took a break from the trail. Sony (and I think Nikon) have competitive models at the same price, features and size.

If you mean 'backpack' as a luggage carrier, pick only two VR-enabled lenses and leave the tripod behind, unless you serious plan after-dark night shots. You might enjoy the trip even better if you just took 1 lens, probably the 24-70 is the best choice for focal length, or the 16-35. Use your phone for connecting to the internet and skip the tablet and reader. Look at your shooting habits and bring enough cards to cover your needs without offloading cards during the trip.

Does it bother you that the Canon G9X Mark II doesn’t have a viewfinder? What bothers me about using my iPhone for photos is that in bright sunlight the image on the LCD screen is impossible to see. It is also much easier to hold a viewfinder camera steady.

Which camera with a viewfinder would you recommend in the same price range and with similar performance as your Canon G9X?

I own a Canon 80D (which I love) with 6 Canon lenses, but am looking for something like your G9X to use on vacations and hikes.

By the way, I have followed your posts for a long time and trust your judgment.

If you sell a film camera on eBay use the auction function and list it with a low minimum bid. That works best. It attracts more buyers.

Be patient. The bidding starts slowly, but by the end of the week two or three bidders will initiate a bidding frenzy.

I just sold my Nikon FM 10 for $160 on eBay. That surprised me. It was in pristine condition and had been used very little. I had been told by camera shops and others that I’d be lucky to get $30 for it.

A week later I sold my Pentax Super Program on eBay for $108.

There seems to be a market for film cameras in good condition.

Although my primary camera is a Canon 80D, I occasionally use my cell phone for snapshots.

My laptop uses Windows 10 and its USB ports are 3.0. Downloading photos from my 80D is not a problem, but photos from my cell phone won't download.

Has anyone else had this problem and what is the solution?

My wife was born and raised in Lima, Peru. We're planning a trip there in November 2019. This will be my first time in country. She is adamant that I do not bring my Canon 6DII along. She's sure my camera gear will be a target for thieves. What have other readers of this thread experienced?

I agree with Zug55. I have lived in Lima for the past 16 mos and have not experienced a robbery or theft of any kind. I take my camera gear in a Lowe backpack or sometimes in my hands. I've traveled in taxis, trains and buses as well as on the airlines. I've been to Cusco, Machu Picchu, Iquitos, Puerto Maldanado, Cartagana
Colombia, and Quito Ecuador as well as to many other destinations.

Don't travel alone (your wife should be sufficient) and have a great time.

Lieb, these were taken just south of Malad, Idaho in the Malad Valley. You are spot on with your take on Idaho...it is a beautiful state for photo ops. Thanks for looking and commenting.

I've driven past Malad many times. I'll have to check it out next time. Thanks.

I'm always drawn to these scenes in a melancholy sort of way. From a drive in Idaho last week looking for migrating raptors.

I've lived in Idaho for over forty years. What a great place with endless photo opportunities. Where were these pictures taken?

Hey folks,
I am taking a 5 day backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon next May. My hike will start from the North Rim. Since weight is going to be factor, I need to limit my camera equip to a backpack style tripod, a camera body, and 2 or 3 lenses. I have a Panasonic G5, which is older, but I like it. The question is which 2 or 3 lenses to take. I have the kit lens 14-42 and the 45-150, but I was thinking of adding a wide angle zoom. I have put aside a little cash for a new lens or lenses, around $1000. What do you guys who have been there recommend?

From having hiked Grand Canyon twice, I would go as light as possible and minimize the number of lenses you take. Two lenses max. One should be a good wide angle lens. Have fun. What a great place.

If by chance you go to La Jolla, you MUST, MUST stop at Brockton's Villa over looking the ocean and have 'Coast Toast', it'll bring you back and you'll want the recipe. Besides where else can get the sweet aroma of Sea lions while dining....

While there you may as well go down to the beach and get some great shots of the sea lions. You can get very close to them.

In addition to the other sites which are mentioned, I think Old Town is worth visiting.

I’ve been to Maui twice in recent years. I’ve driven the road to Hana twice including the unpaved section. The road has been greatly improved and, in my opinion, driving it is no big deal.

I grew up driving the mountains of northern Wyoming so this may have influenced my perception of driving this road. If you are a flat lander, your opinion may be different.

At any rate, I think we can agree that this is one of the most beautiful spots on earth. We stayed in a cottage on a flower 🌸 plantation near Hana and enjoyed it much more than the resort areas. It was much more peaceful without so many people. Taking two days is a good idea. You’ll love it.

Hana is where the author of the novel “Hawaii” chose to live while he wrote the book.
