(NEWSER) – Updated: A Man Ray photograph didn't just break the record for the most expensive photo sold at auction, it obliterated it. "Le Violon d’Ingres" sold for $12.4 million at Christie's on Saturday, well above estimates of $5 million to $7 million and nearly triple the old record for a photo of $4.3 million, reports the Wall Street Journal. An unnamed French-speaking bidder got the iconic image, which features the back of a nude woman. Our original story on the photo from February follows:

A 1924 photograph of a nude woman taken by surrealist artist Man Ray is expected to enter the record books in a few months. When Christie's auctions the black-and-white "Le Violon d’Ingres" in May, it is expected to fetch between $5 million and $7 million, reports ArtNews. The previous record for a photo sold at auction is the $4.3 million paid for Andreas Gursky’s “Rhein II” in 2011, per the Wall Street Journal. The Man Ray image, widely described as "iconic" in coverage, is notable because the artist manipulated it in the darkroom and superimposed violin marking markings on his model's back.

"The reach and influence of the image, at once romantic, mysterious, roguish, and playful, has captured the minds of all for nearly 100 years," says Darius Himes, international head of photographs at Christie's, per CNN. He called it a "masterpiece" and "one of the most iconic works of the 20th century." The Journal offers an unusual example of its status: Actress Julia Fox showed off her tattoo of the image recently while on a date with Kanye West. The late Rosalind Gerson Jacobs, a former Macy's exec, bought the original print from Man Ray in 1962, and the estate belonging to her and husband Melvin Jacobs is now selling it.

I'm with Thom W on this one. We make about $108,000 per year and go pay check to pay check. Just recently got almost out of debt so I think things will turn around for us. It is beyond me how anyone can make it on less than we make.

T***sportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said on Friday that, among the avenues on the table being considered to help pay for a massive infrastructure proposal, is the possibility of vehicle mileage tax.

Since the passage of the $1.9 trillion C***D relief bill, there has been talk of a multi-trillion spending plan for infrastructure.

Buttigieg said, “When you think about infrastructure, it’s a classic example of the kind of investment that has a return on that investment. That’s one of many reasons why we think this is so important. This is a jobs vision as much as it is an infrastructure vision, a climate vision and more.”

One of the ways to pay for it could be to tax drivers for every mile they drive.
“A so-called vehicle-miles-traveled tax or mileage tax, wh**ever you want to call it, could be a way to do it,” Buttigieg said.

The Democrats spent $3.6 million to prove Trump’s innocence. And I thought they didn’t like him.

No matter how strong, or weak the presentation, the Republicans will not flip. Their jobs are on the line contingent upon continued support of Trump by their constituents.
True, they are spineless, and history will not be on their side—but it is what it is.

True, but the same can be said of the Democrats and the backlash they would get if they v**ed for Trump. It’s too bad that no one in Washington can speak their conscience without fear of reprisals from their own party

Not everyone believes that he provoked the i**********n. That will be determined when the Senate v**es at the end of the trial. Probably half the country will not accept the outcome.

Trump has the worst representatives he could possibly have. If the presentation of the trial is the only thing taken into consideration there will be a 100% flip of the Republicans.
