Very nice. I have been on this train in a perfect weather day and took a bunch of pictures. Only problem is that it was too early in my photography life. I wish I could go back today.

I don't understand how you got these pictures. Obviously you were off the train for several. Did it stop for you?

[quote=CHG_CANON]LOL. Old dogs never learn new tricks. Why pay $$$$ for a digital wonder of the modern world and then use it as it was meant to be used? So many think 'success' is to shoot one frame standing straight up, at eye-level, usually slightly out of focus, just like every other person who ever shot from that spot before. Their images look exactly like everyone else's. Success ....

That sarcasm aside, I still fear the old dogs don't want to learn. Varying the aperture, varying the zoom length, varying the AF point location involves learning how to use your camera. Getting down on a knee, getting down on the ground, even moving 5 steps to the left or right, or better yet: 10 steps closer. Some of these tricks might even involve cracking the manual to learn where those controls reside. Spending 5 minutes instead of 30 seconds, when most of us really have all day free; I don't see it happening. I preach these ideas whenever I can find a soapbox....

One of the best comments I have seen from you. People who who cannot imagine and find the views and composition that are available and attractive in a scene haven't really learned about photography.

I am not a Canon shooter, although I am impressed by their mirrorless approach and product and when I switch they (and Olympus) will get serious consideration. I am very familiar after a 40 year career working closely associated with the consumer and commercial product manufacturers like a/c manufacturers with the scroll compressors and washer and dryer manufacturers with increased motor technologies, etc. that it is unreasonable to criticize manufacturers of technical products for discontinuing support of discontinued products and technologies after about 10 years, which is the standard in most industries. And how long did Apple support Aperture after discontinuing it--about 5 years. In this world of fast changing technologies do you want your best companies working on old designs or new and then the next new coming down the road. Canon has been in the camera business for a long time--think of the companies that didn't or couldn't keep up with their technologies and lost significant market positions--Kodak, Motorola, so many car manufacturers, etc, ect, ect. Should Canon be one of those. I hope none of you critics ever work for a strong business consulting firm that I am invested in!

If you are or can go to Madison, Wi, visit the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo! Baraboo is 10-15 miles north of Madison just off of I94. Stay in Madison one day to see the University and, most importantly, get ice cream at Kilwins--definitely one of the best ice cream stores in the country. Only need about three-four hours at the crane place but it is the only place where you can see and photograph all 15 species of crane in the world. My wife and I visited in the summer of 2017 when we were driving from Chicago to Minneapolis and really learned a lot. Saw the birds, then sat in on a couple of presentations.

Founded by two graduates of Cornell Ornitlogoy School many years ago and recently remodeled. We then spent a month in Japan the following January-February and most of the time I was on one of two islands shooting three species of cranes never in the US naturally--except n Baraboo.

A few months ago I had a Seagate drive fail within the warranty period. I decided to try their recovery group as I did have a backup for the time being. I got the recovered drive back in three weeks and about a week later got a new free drive. Didn't wait a month.

I have previously tried to reuse recovered drives (after transferring the info to an unused drive first) and they have worked well. Of course I have triple redundancy--the one a drive system and the other in the cloud, so if any drive fails I can work while it is gone.

This is a really difficult (and unusual) situation to have 2 drives fail so close together.
All drive manufacturers make different quality level drives, and it shows in the warranty period, but even the best quality drive can fail.
I would let Seagate take a shot, even though it will be a long 30 days of waiting, the reason is since you can't get it to mount, you don't have the options they do to get it to mount.
Good luck

Please don't try to save that chip as one of your backups. It could die anytime--more likely than any others you have.

If it is beyond Topaz to fix, your best choice is your delete button. Works well for me and I forget quickly even those I thought would be very interesting. And never stop at one picture with a real keeper.

Thanks to all for sharing your positive experiences. I have never purchased used but, with these three sources identified, I will try them soon as I borrowed a good Canon mirrorless from the store on a recent trip to Patagonia with Lindblad National Geographic. The pictures were definitely crisper right out of the camera from what I have experienced for about 5 years from my Nikon 850. So I am ready for major changes in my equipment.

I'm confused by your statement ".....don't know how to open RAW files in my computer". I just download raw files into my Mac and open them in my editing system, which happens to be Lightroom, and they are there ready to edit as raw. That should be the case with all computers. What you need for difficult conditions is a more capable editing situation, i.e., raw files. Try it.

I just upgraded from a vintage 2013 computer which couldn't be upgraded to the macStudio. I had the Apple store make the transfer and most everything came over with no problem. However I am a big user of the Apple Cloud as I have two homes, each with their own desktop and a few other devices--and I did not have the LR instructions stored in the Cloud. But I did have a backup in Dropbox and another in on of my photo hard drives so I was able to correct things. I learned how important back up is--either cloud, another drive or a third party system (in my case I use all three). The most recent instructions are what is most important for LR

JeffL, I have friends who are professional photographers who I have met on several Lindblad National Geographic trips and several serious amateur friends in my photography club in South Carolina. Many of these people have moved to mirrorless cameras. So they were good photographers to start with and they recently switched to good mirrorless. (I still use Nikon 800 and 850 with lots of glass, so I have not followed them. But I will say I saw an immediate and substantial improvement in their pictures after their change. They are getting spectacular sharpness and color rendition that makes me jealous and they all say it is the rendition of the scene in the viewfinder that is behind this--once they learned how to adjust based on what was shown in the viewfinder before taking the picture.

I'd guess each of its should try it and we would love it.

I travel lots with Lindblad-National Geographic on shipboard excursions to wonderful places. My 10th trip-p with them was a 2 week trip in the Baja and I was with several photographers who had become friends over the years. Every one of them had recently switched to Olympus mirrorless, mainly from Canon DSLR equipment, and they all loved it--even though they were still learning. (Of course I wish I could get their pricing.) I just took my 11th trip a couple of months age to Patagonia and learned that a couple of them at least had gotten the OM-1 and thought it was by far the best camera they had ever used--PERIOD. I'm still using my Nikon 850 and love it, also have an older Sony A7 II which I don't like because of the confusing menu set up. But I think the switch to Olympus is in my future.

CHG_Canon, I am a bit confused by your comment as I travel with Lindblad National Geographic frequently (finally able to tart up again late in February to Patagonia-my 11th route with them) and we always have one to several National Geo photographers as our photography team. Most of them switched to Olympus with the smaller sensor a few years ago (spurred on by great pricing from Olympus for the long haul) and they love their new gear. To me the pictures look spectacular. I suspect they would not do this if their results would suffer.
