Actually Elch (or moose) hide is probably somewhat thicker and stronger than what we in the US would call the hide of an “Elk.” So, what is the name used in Germany, and elsewhere in Europe, for a comparable animal to the North American elk? Frank

I use an EDDYCAM Strap. They are made of Elk leather and are so soft and comfortable. The only down side is that they are a little pricey. https://en.eddycam.com

The animal head imprint in the leather is that of a moose, not an elk. Frank

Is there an explanation why the rocks are grouped rather than spread about? Frank

Suntouched, I totally support your point of view. In addition to enjoying the acquisition of samples of nature’s beauty (photos), I also enjoy having, maintaining, and using my photo gear. If enjoyment was not a benefit of the whole process I would not do it. I also enjoy considering options for improving my gear. Why not? Life is too short as is. Frank

Listen Up- there is NO Shame in upgrading your camera equipment even if only for GAS! If you want it and you can afford it then go for it. You don't need anyone's permission here to do that. You don't need anyone here setting limits on what you buy or how often you buy or if you should buy. If you have a closet full of unused equipment that is your business.

Will it make you a better photographer? Maybe or maybe not. But it will be fun to find out. New equipment will often push you forward to becoming better by the technical advances. It may help you see improvement which may be the catalyst for more improvement.

Why is it there is honor in using outdated equipment? It is often said here that my (really old) equipment works just fine. Well that's fine for you but don't use it as a measure of why someone else should not buy new.

It use to be fun here seeing members say "The Brown Truck is coming and then it fell out of favor followed by other members denigrating the purchase of new equipment. (yes- I have been on this forum for a long time) Why- why taint new equipment purchase with underlying negative judgement? There are real advances in new cameras now that can achieve results that older cameras can't- ISO improvement, focus, reduced size and weight, focus stacking, interval and video results and many other advances.

So let's not treat our members as children but as thinking adults. We should be responding to the implied question of what did you gain by updating not should I update. And GAS is ok.

Maybe it is just me, but I can't imagine someone who takes photos that doesn't want to improve their photos!! Thanks BE SAFE!!

Partially agree. I can see someone saying “I’m good enough skill-wise, I just want to find a broader range of subjects to capture.”. Frank

A beautiful photograph for sure.

If only you could have cut down that pesky tree thing on the left quarter which is a distraction. I suppose the state of Arizona wants it left alone though.

I take a different view. The tree is part what is natural to that particular setting, which overall is beautiful. I am glad he did not remove any vegetation to alter what was there. Nice capture. Frank

I think I am an example of at least some photographers. I do photography because I enjoy it. I enjoy recording examples of nature that to me are interesting or beautiful or both. I also enjoy using photo equipment. While I expect to improve over time, enjoyment trumps achievement for me. While I have not posted any pictures yet, when I do the motive will be to share what I think are some attractive scenes of nature. If you don’t agree that’s OK. I hope UGG is heterogenous enough that all of us don’t have to be acting like we are earning another degree.

I agree with the concept of artistic freedom. But I also think we should avoid giving the impression that a particular photo is as seen by the photographer if it is not. So, if I were to delete a component or add components in PP (e.g., replacing the sky) to a photo, I would acknowledge that. I see it as similar to the broad notion that if in writing, another writer’s contribution is used, then the source should be noted. Frank

So, you want people to pay for your vacation? Good luck with that one! On the other hand, I have come to understand that there is no shortage of dumb people in the US, so you just may get a buck or two.

Every major population of humans has a portion who function below average, and that includes Canada and the U.S., and so on around the earth. Neither the U.S. nor Canada are unique in this respect. Frank

Every major population on earth has it’s share of cognitively below-average and intellectually disabled persons. In fact, if there were no below-average segments of a population, there would not be any above-average either!

I suggest that no lens functions like the human visual system. Everything we “see” is interpreted by the occipital lobes in the back of the brain. For example, I am sitting here visually focused on the coffee cup about 18” in front of me. At the same time I am aware of visual input from left and right, without moving my eyes, spanning nearly 180 degrees. What lens produces the same visual experience?
