Very nice set Ron. In the third photo you can see how many salmon are in the water, easy marks for an experienced bear. Nice captures of the cubs as well watching how mom fishes.

Thanks, The streams were packed with salmon, it was entertaining watching the bears catch them.

Maybe next time hire out a mule?!?! lol Now that all the pain is over, you can look at your photos and say something like "it was worth it"!!!

Our guide told me one guy, not on our trip, actually paid to have someone go along just to carry his camera gear. The hardest part was crossing sometimes knee deep water, praying I didn’t slip and fall in with all my gear.
We did reminisce over a great steak dinner in Homer that night. 🤣

Hey Ron,what great shots! What a fabulous adventure, looks like a perfect day(except for some of the salmon)I see why you would use Emerald Air again. Jusayen

Thank you. Yeah, the salmon didn’t fare too well. We could actually hear their bones crunching as the bears dined on them. We traveled on the bear trails, there was salmon carcasses all over the place.

Many photographers will wait years for these subjects, and still never get a set like this (I am in that category!) Well done!

Thank you. The bear viewing businesses pretty much know where the bears will be given the salmon runs. Our guide told us they only spotted about 15 bears the day before. We got lucky as we counted 30. The trip almost didn’t happen. Our June date was canceled due to weather as the water was too rough for the float plane to land. We re-booked for the end of July, the night before a small earthquake hit Homer, causing the tsunami alarms to go off. We had to evacuate our room for about 3 hours. Trip was an amazing experience.

Excellent! In that second from the last one it looks like you've beem spotted by a curious young bear and he's coming over to check you out. What happened?

He was no doubt watching us as we were watching him. He ended up walking into the brush to make his way around us. Not this guy, but we had another bear walk up stream towards us, he came about 15’ from us before heading up into the brush. Not going to lie, a bit of a pucker factor. In general, they were more interested in the sockeye salmon than us.

Wow !!! Pretty impressive shots. 7, 8, & 9 are my favorites. I hope mama wasn't taking a special interest in you in #9.

We sat and ate lunch about 50-60 yards from mom and her cubs. At first, I was a little nervous being the cubs were with her, but mom didn’t seem to be concerned about us. We gave them plenty of space as we maneuvered around them.

What great photos

Were there more bears competing for the fish in the river?

The streams were thick with sockeye salmon. We were on the ground for about 5 hours. During our 4-5 mile to meet back up with the float plane we encountered around 30 different bears. The only competition for fish was between the two cubs. Mom caught a fish for them. A couple times the cubs growling at each other over the fish.

Thanks for hanging in there and making the trip...these photos you shared with us are superb!!~

Thank you. I didn’t mention we had booked our trip for late June. We arrived in Homer the day before our trip only to be canceled due to weather not being safe enough for the float plane to land. We re-booked for the end of July. The night before our trip, we had to evacuate our room due to an earthquake triggering a Tsunami warning. I was beginning to think it wasn’t meant to be. But, thankfully everything worked out and the weather was perfect.
