In case you folks have not seen this yet:

I found this very recent and beautiful post on DP Review documenting a sandhill crane family filmed in Vero Beach. I hope you all enjoy, I certainly did. It is beautiful, but has a sad ending...

This is the direct link to the YouTube video by stitchlips

I have always wondered the same question....where do they sleep after walking around all day? Thanks so much for the beautiful and educational pictures!

Nimbushopper, These are wonderful! It must have been difficult to choose only a dozen shots from all that you took (and posted on Flickr) to share with us. You hit the jackpot, especially the owl. I can't wait to return to Corkscrew. What time in the morning did you arrive there?

Again, thanks for sharing!

Hi Everyone,

I have been shooting with a Nikon D7000 and using (but still learning) Darktable on a Mac mini (Late 2012) running on Sierra 10.12.3 to post process my pictures. I shoot mainly Florida birds and flowers, some landscapes. I can't use Aperture anymore, so Darktable it is for now. With practice, the results have been getting better and more satisfying as I get used to the software. This morning I was so excited when the UPS-Man delivered my new Nikon D500. I had spent several hours reviewing the user manual, then set up the camera, updated the firmware and went outside to take some test shots. To my great disappointment, Darktable would not read the NEF uncompressed files! I could see the previews, but the RAW files would not open after importing them. Huge BUMMER! I changed to compressed lossless 14 bit and Darktable will open those files, but all of the information is not there and I am disappointed that the uncompressed NEFs are a no-go at this point. Darktable would not read the white balance of the uncompressed 14 bit files and gets stuck (spinny thingy). Nikon Capture NX-D runs so slowly on the Mac mini, it is unusable.

Besides venting and feeling sorry for myself, do any of you kind folks use Darktable? Have you had such issues? Is so, how have you circumvented them? What would you recommend that I try next?

Thanks for "listening" and I look forward to reading your responses.

PS: The D500 is a dream to operate ....so smooth and fast.

Kind Regards,
Margie

Circle B Bar is one of my favorite places. My advice is to get there early, before 10 am and just walk the trails. Nature will unfold and reveal its beauty. We usually spend about 4 hours walking around. At the end we are usually pooped, but very happy with the variety and quantity of creatures seen. Lots of alligators too!

This is very good advice. I find that I often am so excited to see a view or bird or animal that I shoot first and think later. I usually forget to change the aperture (or other settings accordingly) from where I last set it. I'm trying to slow down, breathe and think!
Thanks for posting this.

Hello everyone!
I have enjoyed being a lurker in this forum for a couple of months and I figure it is only fair that I take a few moments to stop and say hello and introduce myself. I am originally from Pennsylvania (Delaware Valley), living there all my life until my husband and I retired, 2 years ago, to the Sunshine State. I have had the opportunity to travel to many places in the world on business and vacations. I do miss some of the photo opportunities, but I don't miss the travel aspect of my life at all. We absolutely love it here in FL on permanent vacation! I have been taking pictures for fun for over 30 years and have always been a Nikon-girl. I started with an N2020 --> D5700 --> D70 --> D200 --> D7000, building a collection of lenses along the way. Now, I'm dreaming of a D500. I suppose GAS has grabbed me big time. Wildlife (mostly birds) and flowers are now my favorite topics. My husband shoots Canon and it is always interesting to compare and see how differently he sees the same subjects through his eyes and lenses.
I look forward to see ing your photos, sharing and learning from you folks.
With kind regards,
Margie

How could anyone be sick of seeing Sand Hill Cranes! They are such beautiful majestic birds. Thanks for sharing. We see many of them on a daily basis. They seem to have adapted quite well to suburban living in SW Florida. This pair came strolling through my back yard.

It looks to be an American Goldfinch. Where did you see this bird? Knowing the location is important.
There is a wonderfully useful iPhone App named "Merlin Bird ID". It has a cool feature where you can snap a picture of your bird (even from a computer screen) and the App will successfully identify the bird. Alternatively, you can determine your bird ID using a few basic inputs: location, date, relative size, main colors, and what was the bird doing when you saw it?. The App will generate a list of possible birds from which to narrow down your choice. You can also manually browse the database of birds (pictures and bird characteristics).
I assume there is an Android version available.
