If the drive is spinning and not making any unusual noises, there is a very good possibility that the drive is ok and only the interface is bad. I have seen this several times and in all cases was able to remove the drive from the housing, attach a USB drive adapter and successfully recover all files. In both cases I purchaesd generic USB drive enclosures and installed the drive in the new enclosure.

I've used El-co Color Labs several times with great results and service. Very good to deal with.
They have a poster "specials":

I recently dug out my old D70S, that had been stored (at normal room temps) for a couple years, and the grips on it were sticky. I used isopropyl alcohol on a cloth and with some rubbing was able to remove the sticky surface.

APS in Morton Grove IL will service it if you really want it serviced. They are an authorized Nikon service facility.

I have also used APS. Very competent and very fast turn around.

To all who have offered advice and recommendations, thank you very much! All greatly appreciated.

After reading all the comments, I have decided to first have my 16-85 checked/calibrated/cleaned at a service center before moving on to a new lens.
If I do move on, I will be looking at something in the same zoom range as the 16-80 f2.8 or similar.

Again, thanks to all!

Well I sent my lens to APS in Illinois and looks like my sharpness issue was due to mechanical problems! Needs lens barrel and zoom roller guide ring. Not sure how I did the damage but I guess that is my problem. Should get it back next week!

I use, and have been using SyncBack Free since it's introduction in 2003. Great software, runs in the background, and once you set it up, it runs and verifies your backups. The best part is the price -

I also vote for SyncBack. A lot of options for versatility local and network backup destinations.

Thanks to all for all the comments! Very much appreciated! Number of responses is great!

I think I need to clarify:

I am looking for other choices (Nikon or even perhaps non-Nikon) for a lens in the 16-85 zoom range as that is what works best for me most of the time.
I have an 80-200 f2.8 Nikon that fills in the top end of what I want.

PS - legs are not necessary on a walk-around lens for me as I have 2 good ones!

Thanks again!

I can handle big and heavy if the results are worth it!
My 80-200 is also heavy, which I am sure you know, but it's results are worth it!

Does this 17-55 change length with zoom or focus? Or both internal?

Probably my biggest issue is that the 16-85 I have is not as sharp as I expect, especially comparing to other lenses I have.
I have tried the lens fine tune adjustment and didn't find much of an error or change with a small correction.
I will look at the old 17-55

Thanks!

I do not expect to upgrade to FX, but one never knows. I do have several Nikon FX lenses, 50mm f1.8, 60mm f2.8 macro and 80-200 f2.8 all non-vr; the 80-200 definitely gives me the most satisfying results.

The biggest part of my shooting fits best to the 16-85 or so range.

I am curious about other's experience with non-Nikon lenses, in the 16-85 or so range, as I have always stayed with Nikon.

I very much appreciate your opinion.

Hi all!

I currently have the AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm F3.5-5.6G ED VR on my D7100 and not really pleased with the results I get with it.

What is your favorite everyday ro "walk around" lens?

Thanks,
Bob
