I used Topaz Styles to get some color shift, increased saturation and structure.

I agree, a lot to be learned. I believe it might be best to just go with black and white. That would solve the color problems. You could then mask areas and color them after all the photo is restored.

Yes it does, I think part of my problem was finding areas to copy from to get the pattern to have some consistency. I tried to reduce some colors in certain areas and it just got away from me.
