Take the crap off the camera, add a 35mm f1.8 and it's perfect.

Hello! I am new to shooting RAW and am getting more confused by the day. I have a professional photographer friend who tells me I HAVE to shoot in raw on an upcoming trip to Africa (I leave Friday!) So I started shooting raw to practice using my dogs. I figured it would be fairly straight forward - I was very wrong. I use a Canon EOS R with various lenses.

In the first screen shot you can see the JPG (right) compared to the RAW photo (left). The Raw photo is super grainy. The JPG is fine. I didn't edit any of these or even try for any good composition, just wanted to practice working with RAW and getting them off of my card - which has also proven to be complicated.

So, my questions - 1) why are my RAW photos much more grainy than JPG? I realize ISO is a bit high in this specific photo, but even when it's not at all, I get the same result. 2) what is the most straightforward way to get to get a raw file off of an SD card and actually be able to do anything with it on a Mac? Lastly, I am probably just going to shoot Large JPG to save myself the panic of ruining something trying to use RAW if I can't figure this out...

I am currently using a DNG converter to get them to Lightroom, then I am not totally sure what to do with them after that, I couldn't even figure out how to save it to post it here as an example as I did with the JPEG.

Thank you so much in advance for any tips/tricks you are willing to lend - I am pretty confused!

If you have to use DNG to move your RAW files it sounds like you don't have Canon software on your computer so you don't have the proper RAW codec. Check on that. You can drop and drag files from your SD card to your computer and open in PS from there. But as you have a time bind, forget RAW and just shoot jpeg large fine. Keep your eyes open and watch your six.😎

I recently bought a new Canon 80D which was an upgrade from my previous 60D. When I downloaded the first photos I took with the new camera the RAW version of the photo does not appear. I am using the photo processing software that came with the 60D.

As you are aware Canon no longer includes the software with the 80D. Does the software need to be upgraded ? Have I done something wrong in the camera setup ? Is there another answer ?

If I neglected to say the JPEG image does appear. I am not particularly camera or computer savvy.

You need to update your RAW codec. As stated above, download the newedt Canon software and you'll be good to go.

My wife and I enjoy watching detective/murder mysteries together. We are currently watching the ongoing British series "Midsomer Murders". Last night we watched Season 10, Episode 6 titled "Picture of Innocence". The plot of the episode (circa 2006) revolved around conflict between one group of older film camera only club members and a second group of younger digital camera users. I found it interesting to watch the heated rivalry. I had to laugh several time when I observed a few technical "mistakes" in the episode such as apparently developing color prints in a darkroom in trays under safelights. I just thought I'd share.

Just FYI, in the early 1970s, I used to process Agfacolor prints in open trays albeit without safelights for Kranzten Studio in Chicago. In the 1980s I did Cibachrome prints up to 20x24 in trays in my home darkroom. I get more upset by movies misusing a Speed Graphic.

I must respectfully disagree. I have four friends who have traded in their 850s for the 500. They have stated that the 500 is far superior in every way. Based on their experience I have bought a 500 and I am thrilled it. I have also done extensive research that indicate the 500 is the better camera.

While the D500 may be the best camera that accomodates your idiosyncrasies it is hardley the better camera. A good camera, yes.

I’m off to China, Tibet and Hong Kong and am thinking about what lenses to take with me. As you all know, somehow the pull of gravity increases as we get older so weight is a consideration. I’ll be taking my D7100 with a Nikon 18-200 as my primary lens. I also plan on taking my Nikon 10-20 which is great for landscapes as well as crowded cities. Do you think I should also include my 35mm 1.8 in my kit. I’ve taken it on other trips and not used it very often. My other concern is with changing lenses often. I’ve often ended up with sensor dust which is tough to deal with when traveling. I always bring a blower and this trip I’m bringing a sensor cleaning kit.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Just take the 10-20, no changing lenses, less weight. Otherwise just take the 35mm.

Good morning everybody!! 🌞
Me again....

I am looking to purchase both, a telephoto and a prime lens.  Want to stay in the $300-350 range, total.

This is the telephoto I'm looking at on Amazon, but what does "(renewed)" mean??  Is that the same as refurbished??

Canon EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 is STM Lens for Canon SLR Cameras (Renewed) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010FAU86K/ref=cm_sw_r_fm_apa_i_bAGIDbJXW30VA

This is the prime 50mm f/1.8 I am looking at this one on Amazon.
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X8MRBCW/ref=cm_sw_r_fm_apa_i_ojGIDbD7SDR05

For the 50mm, reviews states improvements such as metal mount, sturdier barrel and AF/MF switch, larger focus ring, grippy matte finish and STM.  However, it also states thread size is 49mm instead of 58mm, which is what my SL2 has.

Now, do all "nifty fifty" lenses have a 49mm thread?  Would the 50mm stand alone as an everyday lens without having to pair it with filters/tubes, etc, or would I have to buy even more items dedicated to just this 1 lens, or do they make a 58mm thread for it? If it's on Amazon, I'm just so tired, I'm apparently overlooking it....but If it's a stupid question, and they don't or can't make those number configurations, please go easy on me. I'm the first to admit numbers are NOT even close to being my strong suit.  I think that's why I find aperture, shutter speed, and ISO so difficult to grasp. Numbers, numbers, and more numbers...《sigh》 I read and YouTube everything I can, trying to "get it", but it just gets overwhelming and my brain turns to mush. 🤯

Anyway, I digress, but I do have just one more question (for now)....

For someone like me, who's just doing this as a hobby with my daughter, are these lenses ones that will be ok for a long while, without the need to upgrade?

I just want some decent lenses to take nice, crisp pictures for us to have and enjoy; maybe put some in scrapbooks and such for future generations.  I'm not looking to file bankruptcy with constant upgrades, become a pro, or be featured in NatGeo or anything. 😂😝

Thanks in advance!
Angee

As your camera is a half frame or crop sensor, I'd suggest a 35mm lens, f2 or 1.8, as a normal lens instead of the 50mm.

Yes, download the update to your SD card in your computer. Move the SD card to your camera to install the update.

About an hour ago, I was taking my D500 with the 18-105 lens off my tripod and it slipped out of my grip. It fell on carpet. The lens came of and is trashed. I put my only other lens, a Nikon 50mm f/ 1.8 on the body. Thank God, the body is fine. Now I get to save for the Nikon 18-140 zoom.

Great excuse to go buy a Z7 !

I have recently acquired a Canon R. I have an iMac which is updated with Mohave. I do not use Apple photos app but keep my photos in a separate file on my desktop. I am finding that randomly when I wish to open a photo the thumbnail shows the photo but the file is just black when I try to look at it. Can anyone suggest what I need to do to overcome this problem? TIA.

Update your codec.

The strongest shoulder bags that I have ever seen are the Lowepro Magnum series 200AW, 400AW, and 650AW. I have the 200AW. It's a fairly large bag. I can put my D500 with attached 80-400mm lens in the bottom. The 400AW and 650AW are even larger. The Lowepro Magnum 650AW interior dimensions are 16.1 inches long, 11.2 inches wide, and 11 inches tall. What's good also is that they have a one-piece molded bottom that is strong. It won't sag from the weight of the gear inside.

I also endorse the Lowepro Magnum 200AW. I have one I've been using since the film era. It holds more gear then I want to lift, and I grew up shooting 8x10 view camera.

I recently took some aerial photos of the Maine coast (Sony a6000, if it matters). Both images are of the Pemaquid Point lighthouse. The first clearly shows the cliffs going down to the water but the second has lost the perspective. Any suggestions on how to correct this with post processing?

Reshoot from a helicopter, use a normal lens and go lower.
