I've had mixed results with non-branded batteries in my cameras. My old Sony A100 and A200 cameras must have read something in the battery, because they only worked with Sony branded batteries. The non-Sony branded batteries appeared to charge just fine, but the cameras wouldn't recognize them or turn on with them. My Canon T5i worked fine with non-Canon branded batteries and I used them for a number of years. My Canon T8i has only Canon branded batteries, so I can't make a statement one way or the other about the use of non-Canon branded batteries. The advantage of using only Canon branded batteries is that my T5i non-Canon branded batteries came with their own charger, so there is the advantage of only carrying one charger. YMMV.

I'm almost the baby of this group at 74.

Not quite. I'm 71. And I'm sure I'm not the youngest one here. :-)

I like that. My wife might not. And we've "only" been married 50 years.

I was in the 6th grade. We were called into the auditorium and it was announced the President Kennedy had been "shot down". "Shot" and "shot down" had entirely different meanings and I remember being confused by this.

They RF lenses are only for R series cameras.
But ALL your EF lenses work just fine on R series cameras.

Thank you. Sounds like I won't be buying these lenses then.

Three new lenses have been introduced today.
1. RF-S 10-18mm f4.5-6.3 STM
2. RF 24-105mm f2.8 L IS USM
3. RF 200-800mm f6..3-9 IS USM

The 24-105mm looks like a good replacement for the short range 24-70mm lenses with the longer 105 mm and still f2.8.
It also has a fully manual aperture ring.

The 200-800mm should be great for those needing reach but can't afford the 5 figure 600mm or 800mm lenses and you get full compatibility with the TCs. At $1,900 a great deal.
PS it, like several other Canon lenses uses diffractive lens to help with size and weight. They just don't put it all over the lens.

The question I have is this, are the RF lenses intended for their mirrorless cameras, or can they be used with, for example, the T8i?

In the 28 years we've lived in this house we've had exactly ONE person come by. And that was years ago. My wife gets a bag of candy that she likes so it won't go to waste.

I am planning a May 2024 Viking river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest.
Would like to take close up photos of the castles along the Dandube and Rhine rivers. I plan to take either a 140m or a 200m zoom (not both) using a Nikon D7100. Which would be best to use? Thank you for your assistance.

We've got reservations for the same cruise, only in 2025. Have a great time.

I would take the 200mm zoom.

Prague and Budapest are beautiful cities. I am looking forward to seeing your images to take me back there.

Indeed, they are. We visited both in 2015 and thoroughly enjoyed both.

Several years ago I encountered a similar situation but in New York state. I stopped at a road side rest area (limited access highway) to get some photos of the sun setting across a large lake. As I was moving my camera, mounted on an extended tripod, a short distance for a different view point, a security guard(?) approached me asking me what I was doing. When I told him, "Taking photographs of the sunset" he explained that he thought I had a rifle. Even in subdued light, a fully extended tripod certainly does not resemble a rifle, even with a DSLR and mounted zoom lens attached.

I'm not sure my reply to him would have been polite or printable. If he can't tell the difference between a tripod and a rifle I would suggest that his eyesight was bad enough that he had no business being a rent-a-cop!

I had that surgery around 1995, but opted to one near-sight and one far-sight lens (they did not have the multi-focal option "back in the day"). Has worked quite well, no halos except when I see angels and such.

You are clearly not a pilot. The FAA takes a dim view of your approach. I'm glad it has worked for you, but it is not an option for pilots. Oh well...

It rained yesterday on the north shore of Kauai (big shock :-) ). I got caught and the camera got wet. No biggie, this has happened before. I covered it with a tablet before it got too wet (or so I thought). When the rain quit (it does that quickly around here) the camera would not power on. Yes, I swapped batteries (and today even charged the one that was in the camera) - it didn't make any difference. I dried it out and tried again today. No difference. I'd hate to use my phone's camera for the rest of our vacation, but will if necessary. Before I get home and take it apart, are there any suggestions on what I should try here? No tools, they are at home.

Thanks.

The same for me. B&H is, in my limited experience, 1st class.
