You already have a very good raw processor/editor on your iMac. Apple Photos has all the basic editing tools, and is all you need for most processing. You will want to move on when and if you want to do “local” processing with layers and other tools, but for now, and maybe for years, it is all you need.

Further, it upgrades frequently at no cost, mostly to quite quickly include new camera models in its capabilities.

I also found a new home for my a6000 after switching to a M43 system (Panasonic) a few years ago.

There is wonderful software called Photolinker that will do what you need. It will convert lat/long info into precise location and add tp EXIF.

Further, there are any number of iPhone apps that will create lat/long time stamped tracks called GPX files. The software will then match those to the time stamp in the EXIF data and embed the lat/long measurements and description of location.

In addition, this all plots on a map, showing where each picture was taken, and allowing the “ placement” of picture for which you don’t have data.

There are many available GPS tracking apps for Android or IOS, many of them free or minimal cost. They create a “GPX” file, which can be air-dropped, emailed, Drop-boxed, or downloaded from the cloud to your computer. Then Lightroom or standalone apps like the excellent “Photo-linker” will match the location to your pictures based on the time stamp.

Very easy, no extra wires or hardware, and minimal battery drain on your phone.

Try it.

My thousands of pictures in Apple Photo app always display in date taken order, whether on iPad, iPhone, or MacBook. I don’t recall ever changing a setting. Call Apple tech support, and post the result. I would be curious.

Will be on a cruise from London to Iceland with stops in Wales, Ireland and Scotland. Iceland will be new for me and we have 4 stoops there. Due to many factors, I will take minimal gear. I have a choice of my 24-70 or my 70-200. If you had to choose, which would you think most important for the Iceland portion of the trip?

Irm- I will be on the same cruise. Tell me your name and I will look for you on the boat. My name is Linc Kinnicutt. For what it is worth, I will bring a 24-70 equivalent, 28-280 equivalent and a fairly light telephoto for occasional wildlife or birds off the boat.

See you.

I’ve had the G9 for about a month. It is fantastic! I love the GX8, but this is unbelievable. Six stops of image stabilization, virtually instant autofocus, and superb image quality.

You don’t need to connect to the computer. Your iPhone has a feature called “Airdrop”, which allows you to instantly send photos to your Mac (or, for that matter, anyone else’s Mac , iPad, or iPhone. )

Amazing- it took until the 21st response before someone answered his question. Not good.

Another way is to do it right in Photos, which has a tool (I believe called “Retouch”, but am not sure) with which you can brush over the pole and wires and they’re gone.

Keep it simple to start. Use your McBook plus a $75 Seagate or WD hard drive (Seagate is fine. Never had one fail in 8 years and multiple drives.)

Then, with your Sony, you can get CaptureOne pro for only $50. Those of us without Sony have to pay $300 (and many, including myself) do.

Learn the iPad editing later. Try Affinity for that, which can do RAW.

If I do that will the EXIF data move to the new library with the photos? That would give me the date each photo was taken and make it easier to put it in the right album.

Yes- All the EXIF data should move along with the photo files.

Try making a different (or new) library the “system library”. If that works you know it is the current system library file which is corrupted, which, by the way, I have never heard of happening. If so, you can move all the pictures to the new system library, but that won’t get back your albums. Should not be too difficult to recreate the albums using Photos’ search function, which will find keywords, descriptions, titles, places, or even things like dogs, beaches, snow, etc

Also, do you have the actual system library file, not just the pictures, backed up?

Start a new Photos Library so you are at least good to go for your trip. (Search help or Google for instructions.) then, for your old one, do you have your pictures backed up, maybe as jpegs? Or the Photos Library? If the latter, see if that works without crashing. If the former, import your pictures in small batches until you can identify the corrupt file.

You can go a long way editing with Apple’s “Photos” before you need anything else, if ever. Free with Apple operating system, currently High Sierra.
