I would like to start working with raw files...can anyone recommend freeware that i can use to get the feel of this before investing in a better program?

I use Nikon's NX-i which is free. I have also Use GIMP 2 which is an open source program somewhat like Photoshop, also free.

I'm relatively new to photography so I decided to do some research, and now I'm driving myself crazy. I have purchased a Canon EOS camera for my girlfriend at one time and I decided that possibly I may need something a little bit better so I've been looking at the Nikon d500 and just working down the line but every time I get online to look at some further information about some other cameras i get even more confused..... I'm lost. As I said I'm somewhat new to the Hobby and I'm wondering if that 500 is just a little bit too much for me I do want a full frame camera that much I do know. Anybody have any suggestions please please let me know so that I can go even crazier. That being said I've learned in the past that you get what you pay for

A good piece of advice I got from a photographer when I got into the hobby was "Buy your second camera first!" I got a Nikkormat FT2 and still have it.

Nice set. You might consider increasing your shutter speed and using auto iso when conditions warrant.

G1 or G2. Up the shutter speed to 1/2000, plus let the iso go auto depending on the camera. My D750 does well at 6400. Nice set. I have a G2 150-600 Nikon.

Thanks so much!
I have a Sony DSC-H300 with 35X optical zoom. I am just learning about all this so any help is appreciated.
With the deer picture, I think it was where it was snowing that it is a bit grainy. As for my Yoshino Cherry blossoms I may have been a few inches away from it. The detail was a happy accident. I know what I like to see though and know if I got a semi-good one or a really good one. Maybe I can learn some more in this forum and finally get some great ones!

The noise (grain) is probably caused by the small sensor size with 20+ megapixels and the relatively low contrast in both shots. If you go onto the digital zoom it will get real bad!

Dear friends,
I am ready to purchase a Tamron 100-400 lens and just noticed that it's an FX model. My Nikon D7200 is a DX. Would it be compatible to use on my camera?
Many thanks.

Yes it will work but the angle of view will be the same as a 150-600 on a Full Frame camera The crop factor for a DX is 1.5 so multiply the focal length(s) of any lens by 1.5x to get your apparent field of view compared to a Full Frame lens. This is a function of the sensor size not the focal length. FX lenses can be used on DX bodys with no problem. DX lenses on a FX body will cause a problem because they were designed for a smaller sensor the image projected on a FF sensor isn't large enough to cover it.

Forgot the top of the nest pole!

Not real easy from the ground because one is on a tall nest pole and the other is way up in a dead tree. That makes for a bad angle. I can usually get a good shot when one is coming in for a landing with a fish. Recently a Pileated woodpecker has hollowed out a home in the nest pole so I got a bonus shot Easter Sunday. D750, Tamron 150-600G2 @ 600mm, 1/2000 f/6.3 ISO 450 hand held & cropped.

Nice shots but with your camera and lens you could do much better with little effort. I generally don't criticize pics posted on UHH but I've taken many moon shots and I can see you are just a few minutes away from a much better shot. I'll just speak of shot two, I think shot one was pretty good.

Shot two.. I think your settings are off. f6.5, iso 100 would get a better image. Use M mode. As far as the shutter speed, use the live view lcd and start at 1/200 sec and raise the shutter speed until the live view shows a contrasty image with the darks prominent, and the lights dark enough so you are getting as few blown highlights as possible.

I can see there's a lot of details that post processing would bring out on your shot, but the over exposed bleached white areas are not recoverable. You can use post processing to bring out detail on an under exposed shot, but an over exposed shot can not recover the blown highlights.

Attached is a pic I took with my Coolpix B700, f6.5, iso-100, 1/500 sec. to illustrate the things I mentioned above.

Thanks. I already concluded after looking at these I need to use M mode. Next full moon I'll try again.
