Hi JD750,sorry for late reply but I just landed in Australia today from China and now arrived home.
I di not use Adobe Tool.
Managed library is where your images are actually stored in Aperture Library and very hard to find and referenced is where your images are in a folder or folders that you create on your hard drive and you can find them and so can other programs.

1: If you have your images managed then you need to make sure that you first have all you images (relocate Originals) and when doing this make sure you have opened all of the stacks or the ones in the stack other that the first will be left behind.

2: Put then in a place that they will live permanently as then you will always still have the ability to easily open then again in Aperture if you have issues and I would do this at least for a few months while you get use to Aperture as it is rather different. If you have the hard drive space thence the accessible for Aperture and Lightroom libraries and any new stuff just import in Lightroom moving forward.

3: Note that any editing that you have done in aperture will not be accessible in lightroom unless you save them as Jpegs, Tif or psd files. I shoot everything in RAW and therefore all the edits I did directly in Aperture did not show in Lightroom and this is why I keep the access open to both programs as I did not want to convert thousands of images into Jpegs or other that would also ear all my drive space.

Keywords had no issue but I cannot remember about ratings; I think the 1-5 star was OK but the coloured tags may have been an issue. I would suggest that once you have referenced all of your images that you then create you lightroom library and import just a small folder first to see what may be missing.

Hope this is some help and not too confusing. I need to try get some sleep now.

Also I only go back to aperture if there is an image that I worked on and like what I did and do not want to try and re-create it in lightroom. I love Aperture but once I got use to lightroom I will not change again as it has some great features that Aperture really lacks.

Hi Jd, I migrated 800gig of images from Aperture to LR5 when it first came out. What would you want to know and I might be able to answer some for you.

I think a 24-70 2.8 is a must and I would highly recommend you look at a Gary Fong collapsable diffuser for your flash when you get them. They do a fantastic job particularly on people.

I agree with you Phil, I have the D4 and did a concert shoot using my 70-200VR11 hand held and while I was happy with the outcome being my first concert the issue was that the D4 shutter nice cannot be reduced so there was some friction from the audience. I have since purchased the Df and absolutely love it and its lightness and the fact that it is almost noiseless. So the next concert I will not get daggers in my back and with the same sensor as my D4 I will get same low noise at ISO4000.
I have attached 2 images at reduced quality

H/Held 70-200 @ 200mm ISO4000 1/250 F4.0

H/Held 70-200 @ 98mm ISO4000 1/250 F4.0

I would go the latest Lightroom as it is getting so good now that unless you need deep etching of your images there will be little need for PS and there are heaps of good training tutorials. PS can consume you as there are so many amazing things it can do and that can take you away from getting out there taking actual pictures.

Hey Mark, I agree with you about scrapping the 14-24 I also have it and it just sits at home and have only used it 4-5 times and sick of lugging that monster around. Nice shot by the way.

depending on the budget I also think the 105 2.8 macro takes such beautiful sharp pictures with good compression and I also love my 50mm 1.4 as it is quick, small and unbelievable in low light

For your wife I would suggest 70-200 VR11 2.8, It is a beautiful lense fas and most pro's us this for portrait work.. I have also used it a few times in 2 seater planes but very difficult because of weight restrictions and its size, you would be better with the 70-300 as smaller and lighter. The other must have lens would have to be the 24-70 2.8

This was done in Perfect Portrait from onOne Software. I just let it use the default setting and it took all of 10 seconds to complete and crop. Didn't play with it as not sure what result is wanted and how far to go but this software is brilliant for Portraits compared to Photoshop.
