My son used to have a hedgehog. She wasn't ugly, but boy do they stink!
I leave mine on and nothing bad has happened.
I wouldn't worry too much with the distortion on the 24-70. Lightroom will correct lens distortion with the click of a button. It will have a greater range of use than any of the prime lenses mentioned.
I do this for football at my local high school and use Shutterfly. It is easy to set up a share site that the players and parents can view the pictures and download at no cost. Easy peasy!
Also, if you follow crime stories there was a big one involving a woman that was murdered doing this same sort of job. Beware.
Near Zurich or Geneva?
These are on the French side:

Apple really screwed the pooch when they removed the cable from the keyboard. Why the hell should we have to be continually recharging something that sits a couple of feet from the computer? And I use Apple products.
Do you have the charging keyboard and mouse? I am guessing not, because I go weeks without having to charge and they charge very quickly. Also, if you just plug one or the other in overnight when you are not using it - you never have to worry about running out of battery. Not being encumbered by more cording is more than worth the "hassle" of having to plug in every so often.
I kayak with my Canon 5Div and my 100-400 lens - I stay in calm waters and do my best at staying away from things like jet skis and the like. I take my backpack and put it between my legs, have my camera resting on it while paddling, and it is easy to grab and shoot with. I do have a pretty stable sit-in kayak with a multi-chine hull meant for fishing and haven't had a problem yet (knocking on wood). Like stated earlier, the time to be most careful is getting in and out of the boat.
Enjoy your time on the water with your camera!
I know there are people that will argue this, but for me, the best camera for night football and indoor high school basketball games is a full frame with a 70-200mm 1:2.8. I personally use a Canon 5DIV. I do not have the time to fix the noise in a games worth of photos and with the low light capabilities of the full frame I generally do not have to.
