I'd heard about the Commlite Nikon F to Sony E adapter last year, and also read that the results were disappointing. I read on Brian Smith's website his results using the version 4 firmware for the Vello (rebranded Commlite) adapter. I decided to take a chance on the adapter, as I have some Tamron and Nikon lenses I would really like to use with my Sony A7R2 and a6500.

I tested the adapter with the following lenses: Tamron 70-200 2.8, Tamron 15-30 2.8, Nikon 24-70 G 2.8, Nikon 85 G 1.8, Tokina 100 2.8 D. A7R2 with 4.0 firmware. a6500 with version 1.04 firmware. I used center focus point, and aperture mode. Testing for autofocus results.

I tried the a6500 and the A7r2, both cameras had the same results. Bright daylight: The Tamron 15-30 worked every time, autofocus was fast and accurate. The Tamron 70-200 unpredictably would sometimes get focus, but was unreliable. Nikon 24-70 worked well, usually fast autofocus, did not work as well as the Tamron 15-30. Nikon 85 G was unreliable, would autofocus sometimes, other times it would not work at all. The Tokina did not work at all, being a D type lens.

In a living room lit by some open windows, I found that the Tamron 70-200 would not work at all. The Tamron 15-30 worked well. The Nikon 24-70 would not work sometimes, other times it would. Unreliable in the low lighting. Nikon 85mm similar to the 24-70. Sometimes it would sporadically autofocus, most of the time no autofocus. Tokina 100 did not work at all.

As for the MC-11 Canon to Sony E mount adapter, I went to a football game this afternoon, bright sunlight conditions. I used the Canon lens on the a6500. I was in Aperture mode, Hi drive, using various apertures up to f9. I had the camera set to center focus point, but to my surprise the camera's focus point that I saw in the viewfinder had moved to the lower third of the center. I had not changed anything. I tried to reset this focus point back to the center several times, and it would NOT remain centered. I finally used flexible spot focus to move the focus point back to center.

The autofocus seemed to work well, but with the focus point behaving unpredictably, I wouldn't trust it on important events. I'll try to figure out what happened or a solution to making sure the focus point remains centered.

This was my first time trying to use the a6500 in a sports situation, and while the focus point was a problem, in a quick review of the pictures, I found quite a few looked pretty well focused and usable.

I understand there is new version 5 firmware for the Vello adapter, am hoping it will correct some of the issues I experienced.

Thank you for the suggestions. I also posted the question in a FB group and heard from a gentleman who had owned and used both of the lenses. He liked them both, but said the Sony was better autofocusing, and image quality was very close. I think his information, plus other comments, has me persuaded that the Sony is the right one for me.

Advice requested on which of these lenses to purchase for my A7RII. I'm considering the Sony Zeiss 35mm 1.4 or the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art with the MC-11 adapter. I've read reviews, watched vids and need more information. I want one of these lenses to use in indoor lower lighting situations, such as a wedding or other event where flash might not be allowed. So, autofocus speed matters a lot in which one is more suitable to me. Sharpness also matters a lot, of course. I've read/seen that both lenses tend to hunt in low light, but I'm wondering if the native Sony might do better than the adapted Sigma in that area. Asking for opinions on low light autofocus performance, image quality, and which one you would depend on to be sure you get the shot needed at an event. Thanks.
