Get 8 x 10 prints of that bear from the two differing cameras and on one of the prints the bear will be larger, that is, take up more of the print than the image made from the FX camera, even though the focal length of the lens that created the image was the same.

I agree that the effect looks like solarization. Rufus

If using a short focal length, don't shoot wide open. Depth of focus is important. Getting the eyes sharp is not enough.

MtnMan: You explained 'WHY' in five words better than I did in ~50. Incidentally, my first job out of school was designing optical systems for the Navy.

For amusement, I just calculated the difference in angles of view to a corner and to the center of a side of a full-frame sensor. The difference is truly trivial so a round hood is just fine on any lens near that focal length.

Note that the useful angle of view of any lens is larger in the corners than at the sides because the sensor is not round. Therefore, any lens hood should allow for this, and block the stray light that would reach the corners of the sensor, without affecting the desired light on the rest of the sensor.

When I shoot portraits, I want the eyes to be needle sharp, The catch light and the details of the iris make the photo for me. If these are not sharp, the photo may be pleasing but not compete as a portrait.

My first camera was an Argus A and cost new $10 in 1939. I still have prints of my grade school classmates I made then. Owned many cameras since then but getting that one was a high point in my young life. (I'm 89 now)

Changed thread: I had to look up "Sue" 'cause my memory isn't quite so sharp at 89. The song was written by Johnny Cash, with 10 verses. One verse ends with these lines:

So I gave you that name & I said goodbye,
I knew you'd have to get tough or die,
And it's the name that helped to make you strong.

It gets better!

To me, at this time, the most important specification for a lens is "angle of view" for either a FF sensor or a more narrow sensor. It is easy to calculate this but a nuisance. Example: I recently wanted to know if changing from 28-70 focal length lens to a 24-70 lens would give me the increased angle of view I needed. (The answer was yes.)

A Jakebreak is a breaking system used on heavy trucks to reduce wear on conventional friction brakes. It uses the engine compression, rolling downhill, to provide a retarding force by allowing compressed gases in the cylinders to escape into the atmosphere before the next cycle of the engine. Each release of the compressed gas makes a very loud sound which is why, in populated areas, there are signs saying "No compression braking allowed", meaning no Jakebrake,or the equivalent. CDL refers to Commercial Driver License.

Thanks, Jake,
Great pix of a great car. I built the first Model A in Seattle with a V-8 and hydraulic brakes (1942) With a CDL in the family I also understand JakeBrakes. I was a car nut before I was a Camera nut. Rufe

Tell your printer you want to print 5 x7 but load 8x10 or 8.5x11 printing paper. In my Epson this terrible waste of paper saves the whole image. With a paper cutter, I can then trim or save what I want.

There is a museum in St. Pierre, with good anchoring offshore. From my boat I photoed early morning fishermen throwing nets into the surf. The island is known for how the locals all dress up in town.

I have my 1000F, bought in 1956, sitting on a shelf where I can admire it. It sits next to an Argus Model A, a Rollie 35, a Nicon F4, and a few others wonderful machines. All bring back good memories.
