Thank you to those who responded. The photos have never been used for anything not specified in the schools written permission form. I don't plan to sell any of them but wondered if they would be my photos to keep or if they belonged to the school. Thanks again.

Several years ago I started taking photographs at school during my lunchtime and recesses. I used my own equipment. There were no contracts but the school requires a release to have pictures used for various things like the newspaper, website, etc. I did it because I wanted to and enjoyed creating an end of the year slideshow. I am wondering if the photographs belong to me or if they belong to the school? I am getting ready to retire soon and I figure someone is going to ask to have some of the photos. I am wondering if I legally have to give them my photos or if they are mine.

Thank you all for your responses. I thought probably the thumb drive might be the best option but wanted to ask the experts what thoughts they had. I will investigate the cost and see if that is a possibility. I love this site. You are all so helpful. Thanks again!

I am a teacher and take around 5,000 pictures a year of our students. At the end of the year I make a movie from the photos. To help raise money for our school we sell the DVD. My question is this: Many people no longer purchase a computer with a dvd drive and many do not own a dvd player for their television. What options do I have other than creating a DVD? Thought about a jump drive but is that doable? I would appreciate any suggestions.

This group always has great information to share with those of us in need. Love this site.

steinr98 I was reading your post about displaying photos on your television. You said to make sure the long side of your photos are at least 2000 pixels. Is this for the 4K televsions or any television? Also, what pixel number do you suggest for the vertical side? I haven't displayed any photos on my television and would love to do that but want to fill the screen when I do. Thank you for your help.

A friend of mine and her husband are going to Alaska in June and she asked me for a camera recommendation. She does not want a DSLR. She doesn't want to have to mess with lenses. She didn't give me a price range but I would take a guess and say not over $500-$600 or less. She wants a camera that does not have a delay when she pushes the button. I've read some posts and this is what they suggested. Canon SX50 or SX60, Canon Power Shot SX series or the Nikon P610 or P900. I don't know anything about these cameras and I know many of you are very knowledgeable about this type of camera. Thank you for your suggestions.

Looks Amazing!

I had one of my images put on the rear window of our motor home this week and I couldn't be happier with the outcome! I am going back down and going to show them some of my images and see if they might be interested in some kind of a deal to use on others in the area! I know there are a lot of free photos on the internet but I am talking about local shots. This is what mine looks like from the outside and the view from the inside with it installed!

I didn't get all the barcodes sent the first time either. They let me know what I was missing and once I sent the rest in I had the rebate withing a couple of weeks.

It took a little over a month for mine to come back, I neglected to send one of the several box bar codes they want. They informed me of this about 3 weeks after I mailed it in. I quickly sent the right one and after that, it came about 2 weeks later. Mine was a pre-paid American Express card with $350 on it.

Great suggestion. I will try it. Anything to keep all of this straight!!!

one easy way to know which have been edited is to make an additional folder titled with the same title you were using, but add the word edited, example, folder named "students 4-9-16" plus added folder named "students 4-9-16 edited". that way you have the originals plus an edited folder that is easily identified.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I am using my 1TB Passport to move photos from home to school and back. Somewhere over the past few years I thought I read that you shouldn't work directly from the external drive because it could burn it up. Have no idea where I read that so that was my main concern. I was afraid if I worked from it that I might lose everything (I know that is always possible so I do make a backup every day). What I've been trying to do is remember what folders I have made changes to and then just add those changes to those folders. I know I should be writing those things down so I would know for sure but I am lazy and am not doing that step! I was beginning to confuse myself trying to remember all of those changes and what needed to be copied and going which way, home to school or school to home. I do have all of the original photos backed up and have just created folders and copied the photos I wanted to work with so I would always have the originals. Sounds like the easiest and least confusing option would be to just copy all folders each time I have worked on them so I don't miss any of the changes. I just didn't want to burn my external drive up from working directly from it.
I am using Lightroom 4.4 and Photoshop 7 to edit my photos.

Perfect. I wasn't sure if I would create a problem by editing the pictures directly on my external hard drive or not.
orrie smith wrote:
your external hd will work just as your internal hd. so, if you put your folders on your external hd, take the drive home and edit the photos and save the edited photos on the external hd, you just need to plug the external hd into your laptop and drag the edited folders back onto your laptop. if the external hd becomes a burden to transport, you could do the same thing with flash drives.

I am using an external hard drive not my SD card.

Unless you are referring to your SD card as an 'external drive, I think that simply putting the SD card in a baggie (to more readily keep track of it!) might/could-or-would be an even easier method of transporting the images than lugging the external drive to-and-fro.

I need advice. I am working on photographs that I will be using for our school slideshow. This is what I need help with. I am taking various photos of around 300 kids. I take the photos off my camera and save them on my school laptop. This is where I am having issues. I do not want to take my school laptop home every day so I am transporting photos back and forth using an external hard drive. At this point I still need to keep the classes separated into folders. Would it be better to edit the photos on my external drive instead of editing them, saving them to my computer and then copying them back to my laptop at school? At times I find myself in a fog because I am not sure what I have transported back and forth, thus wondering if I only worked from my external HD would be a better solution. I do not have cloud storage so that is not an option.
