Because the 35 is a 1.8 and the 18-200 is a 3.5-5.5.

I’m heading to Rome and Sicily. I’ll be taking my trusty D7100 with me. I plan on taking my 18-200 as my walk around and my 10-20 for crowded cities, churches and scenery. I also have a 35mm 1.8. Do you think I’ll really need that. I’d like to travel as light as possible but don’t want to shortchange myself. Your input is much appreciated.

In my opinion you have a nice travel kit with your three lenses. You bought them to use so take them. Your kit only weighs 4 lbs which is fairly light. They will fit beneath the seat in front of you on your flights. I just returned from a 35 day tour and I used the equivalent of a 24-120mm f/2.8-4 for 33 of the days, 1 day 16-36mm, 1 day 100-400mm and 0 days 32mm f/1.4. I still have your identical equipment and it works great. Have a great trip!

Thank you. Your suggestion makes total sense, in that if I don’t take them all I’ll probably regret it.

I’m off to China, Tibet and Hong Kong and am thinking about what lenses to take with me. As you all know, somehow the pull of gravity increases as we get older so weight is a consideration. I’ll be taking my D7100 with a Nikon 18-200 as my primary lens. I also plan on taking my Nikon 10-20 which is great for landscapes as well as crowded cities. Do you think I should also include my 35mm 1.8 in my kit. I’ve taken it on other trips and not used it very often. My other concern is with changing lenses often. I’ve often ended up with sensor dust which is tough to deal with when traveling. I always bring a blower and this trip I’m bringing a sensor cleaning kit.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Have the sensor cleaned before leaving, rent or buy a Nikon 18-200mm (or 300mm), fit that and don't remove it from the camera for the whole trip. Your sensor should not get dirty. Perfectly adequate lenses as long as you don't go out to max zoom,

Thanks for your input. I actually had the sensor cleaned and mounted my 18-200, but I like to use my 10-20 for landscapes and in crowded cities. I know, it’s a trade off but a once in a lifetime photo opportunity. Life is a crap shoot so I’ll hope for the best.

Thanks for the warning. It appears wet is the way to go.

The D7100 has no low pass filter.

During a few of my overseas trips I’ve ended up with dirt on my sensor and, of course, spots on my photos. When I’ve returned off my D7100 goes to Nikon for a cleaning. While I always take a rocket blower with me it’s never solved the problem.

So now I’m off for three and a half weeks in China and I think I need to take a sensor cleaning kit with me. The question is, wet or dry. Visible Dust makes what looks like a perfect wet kit but I’ve also seen cleaners that look like a piece of jello on a stick. I don’t know if the spots are just simple dust or oily in nature.

I would appreciate any feedback from those of you who have dealt with this problem. Thanks for your help. BTW, the 7100 has no filter in front of the sensor.

Almost every time I travel I end up with dirt on the sensor of my D7100. While I always carry a rocket blower it’s not enough. As I’m now heading to China for over three weeks I need to take a proper sensor cleaning kit with me; but what type? Dry, wet, sticky? I just don’t know. Please help me with this. I’d like the easiest, most effective method that I can do on the road. Thank you all in advance for you’re help and guidance.

I have had the 18-200 with the zoom lock for a number of years. It’s been all over the world with me and has done a great job. While on rare occasions I wish it had a bit more reach, it has not been often enough for me to switch to something larger and heavier. To me it’s the perfect walk around. When I travel I also take a 10-20 and a 35 1.8. All together fairly light and covers all my needs.

Today is February 2. It does not, however, negate your point. It was a terrible loss to the music world.

A great deal has to do with your budget. There a good choices staring at around $200 up with the usual no upper limit. Some folks will tell you that you need to spend $2000 for a good pair. Personally I own two pair of Vortex Diamondbacks; a 10x42 and a 8x32 which I recently purchased for travel. I visited the Vortex factory while in Wisconsin and picked them out. I’m very happy with both pairs which satisfy my needs. Btw, Vortex has the best warranty in the business. Lastly, if you want to try a few pairs, Cabelas has a good selection. Good luck in your search.

The one lens you will wish you had is a wide angle, say a 10 or 11-20 or 24. The cities are very crowded and a wide angle will allow you to get great photos of buildings, etc. you will also want it for landscapes. I didn’t own one when I went to Vietnam and regretted it. Btw, I took my 35 mm and never used it. My 10-200 covered everything. Have a great trip. It’s a beautiful country.
