IBIS will give you better stability no matter which lens you use. With the R5 and the RF 24-105 I can brace against my body and get 1sec. exposures if I am very careful.

I did a search and did not turn up anything specific even though I sure it has been beat to death and I just couldn't find it. Will the current crop of high end Mirrorless cameras make the SLR obsolete. It seems that the mirrorless does everything the SLR does and more. Sorry for what I am sure is repetition.

I have a 5d Mk 4 with 24-105 f4 II for sale. Comes with a Sunway Photo Arca Swiss compatible L bracket and a 199.00 Canon Angle finder. I would rate the camera at E. It has a couple of wear spots from the strap, but there are no scratches. It has never been dropped or used in the rain. All functions work correctly. The screen has no marks and has been covered with a protector since new. The lens is E+. No scratches on the body or glass and functions perfectly. The angle finder has been used twice and is like new. This comes with the original box, charger, battery and cables as well as all caps. Asking price for all is 2,500. This is less than KEH without the bracket and angle finder.

There is nothing that I know of wrong with this equipment. Just want to scratch the R5 itch.

There are some samples of images under my name in the gallery as well as on my FB page under Bill Nourse.

Don't know if anyone is interested, but Adorama has a sale on the 5D Mk IV with Flashpoint zoom li-on x TTL speedlite for 1999.00. Canon site has the same price without the speedlite. Makes me wonder if the 5d Mk V might be on the way???

As to your thoughts on Paramount (butterfly) illumination? "...Further explanation would be helpful..."

I would like to be proactive here on your and the cosmetology students behalf...
My credentials? I hold a Cosmetology license in Makeup Artistry... and have decades of experience as a bridal makeup artist. Please accept my apologies for posting in your thread however only by showing you actual imagery would it be possible for you to truly appreciate the merits of paramount illumination.

I've selected a series from my commercial makeup artist's portfolio which showcase nail decor. In these examples paramount illumination using a 22" beauty dish with grid and sock was used. So you can grasp the transformation makeup can have on an individual I'm including (first image) the talent without makeup (a clean face) as she arrived on set. btw, in the first image no reflector below her face was used to eliminate shadows in the eye sockets... However in the other images a 30x40" foam core reflector was placed at breast height just out of frame. You can see this reflector in the catch lights in her eyes...

This lighting modifier is readily available for Flashpoint 600 strobes...
Here is a very cost effective example...

If that is beyond your budget then a reflected silver umbrella of similar diameter will do (typically under $20 ~ $30).

Hope this helps or is at least food for thought...
It is only provided as a learning tool not in anyway to be taken as a critique on your efforts..
btw, I will be on assignment for the next several days so forgive me if I don't respond to queries...

All the best on your journey billnourse

billnourse first my sincere appreciation for your ... (show quote)

I have a 16" beauty dish with honeycomb and sock as well as silver umbrellas. Did not use them that day. Was using a barn door on a 7" cone. Did not use a reflector underneath. The main light was at about 45 degrees above right instead of directly in front.

As for critique, it is my opinion that the only way one improves is through arduous trial and error and through constructive criticism. Thank you for the tips and the explanation of this lighting technique. I have use it before, but had not heard it referred to as paramount or butterfly lighting. Our professor just referred to it as glamor or beauty light.

Don't know what that is. I am using Flashpoint 600 strobes for lighting. Further explanation would be helpful.

Was asked to shoot some images for the local college's cosmetology department to use in portfolios for students. These are a couple of the shots.

A really remarkable shot. I've been enamored of Shiprock ever since it played a role in a Hellerman mystery I read. Got a pic of it from the highway once, but of course it was far away. Could you please tell me how far it is from the highway? Thanks.

There are places where it is real close. If you go South from the town of Shiprock on 391 to Red Rock Highway and turn right, about 4 miles down red Rock Highway it will be very close on your right. There is a dirt road to the right that will take you even closer and there is a large parking lot where you can park and walk even closer.

Here is one I took from that location looking South to North. The Black an White I took from a different location looking from East to West. Here is another from the same location, but with a more dramatic sky taken at a different time.

Those look great! I’m curious, how did you light the nighttime / dusk shots? The light looks too natural to be an on camera flash.

Single Flashpoint 600 pro strobe with a 38" Glow ParaPop hex softbox.

Ah. That explains a lot. We actually tried to get to somewhere that we could actually spend some time shooting this mountain and could not. It's so in the middle of nowhere.

There are lots of primitive roads that will get you about anywhere you want out there and I don't think you would be challenged if you did not go through a marked gate or other place that is posted. Most places out there are not posted. We have shot all over the Reservation including other angles of Shiprock with no problems.

Leave no trash, do not drive off of the roads and be respectful and I doubt you would have any issues.

I have a 6 stop and a 3 stop in Breakthrough, but mostly only use the 3 stop. If I need a bit more than that I just stack with a Breakthrough polarizer for an extra 1 1/2 stop. I can also stack the 3 and 6 for 9. When stacking one must to be aware of the possibility of vingetteing and compose with that in mind. I also have a set of Lee square filters that I seldom use unless I need a gradient filter.

In my opinion Breakthrough is making the best filters out there right now. They have less distortion and color cast than any of the high end filters available and their website shows examples.

Shiprock is so lovely, and photographing it at night had to have been a real hoot. Did you need a permit to do so? If so, where did you get it?

Did not have to have a permit. We are friends with some Navajos that live near where we took the photos.

Flip rear screen, broader dynamic range, 10+ FPS, higher useful ISO (3800 or so), focusing in lower light conditions (maybe EV -5, the EOS Ra is -6), more auto focus points. At least get it to the level of a Sony A7III.
