Just as long as you recognize that you actually didn't fix the problem, but created a good workaround - for now. And that in order to "fix" the problem you will need to upgrade you computer. I had a computer I built in 2010 that I just retired a couple of months ago because it was running Win 7 and I didn't want to go through the bother of upgrading the OS - I've had better experience in the past with wiping the machine clean and making a clean fresh install on the OS. But It was running the previous versions of PS and LR just fine. Of course the Win10 laptop is snappier but that's not what drove me to replace it. Concerns about software publishers and Microsoft abandoning support for Win7 was the impetus.

Gene I am thinking a new computer before to long. I have a HP envy windows 10 desk top and it is six years old, it works well for me and I use elements. I was wondering what you are buying to replace your win 7 machine? bud

(Sorry, I couldn't resist... a customer buys things. A costumer makes costumes for plays and films.)

The costumer is not always right but he is always the costumer.

5:00 AM Pacific Time: Monday went on line and ordered a camera for my wife from B and H. 12:30 Pacific time on Tuesday it was on my front porch. I am about as far as you can get from NY and still be in the lower 48. Just want to say Thank you to the folks that work so hard to make this possible. MERRY CHRISTMAS to all the HOGS. bud

I can't stand the shadow effect on the recent update. It is even on when I bring up Photoshop Elements 15. All my pictures have that shadow effect also. I've done everything. I looked it up and in says to go into settings (Advanced) and turn off "Shadows under windows". I did that and it still won't turn off. HELP!

Tracy,
I had a similar problem and had tried every thing me and my computer fixer knew with no results. One day making some changes in location we used a different cable on the monitor and the problem was gone. put the old cable back and the shadow was back. I was using elements 14. Not always software. bud

Ok, So I'm right in the middle of this giant learning curve called Photography. I've owned cameras in the past but at 71 years old I am now jumping into Digital photography. I bought a Nikon D5600 and have been taking pictures like a wild man. I have yet to start shooting raw but want to learn. I don't want to spend a lot of money on post-processing so I've been looking at free software. I was recommended Gimp but when I went there and began It made my head hurt. Serious, serious learning curve. So my question is... Is gimp worth the time to learn or would you guys recommend another program?

Jim, I understand your quandary. I am 82 years old and got serious about photography after I retired. I tried all the free stuff and wasted a lot of time. My solution was elements. The program has several phases and allows you to start with a lot of help and work your way up to the expert level. With elements you are learning many of the features of Photoshop CC if you ever decide to upgrade. Elements does have a learning curve but by this time of your life you know there "ain't" no free lunch. It is a fifty dollar program so quite affordable. I went to photoshop cc and changed back to elements as the big program had many features I don't use and an ongoing expense each month. Good luck with your new hobby and keep shooting. Post processing adds a lot to the fun but Jpeg pictures are nice also. bud

Hi, UHH members,

I'm a new forum member but have been reading the forum Q & A section for almost a year now, so I think (hope) I'm fairly familiar with how things work here.

Some of you have been very helpful by answering how-to and equipment-specific questions from others that have helped me quite a bit and now I have a question / request of my own that I haven't seen asked and answered in the posts I've reviewed: Are there any members here from the Phoenix, AZ area (specifically, the east valley, around Mesa and Apache Junction) that can offer one or two decent locations for spotting and photographing bald eagles?

I routinely hike Lost Dutchman State Park on the weekends and have seen my share of deer, rattlesnakes and hawks, but never a bald eagle. I've recently been going to a section of the Salt River, near the Phon D Sutton parking area and just by chance, spotted a pair of beautiful bald eagles about a month ago, but just as I got the camera turned around, they were off and on the other side of a hill; not to be seen again. I've been back to the same site three times and just sit with my gear set up and waiting (3-4 hours at a stretch) for them to come back, but haven't seen them since. My preference would be stay close to the east valley area and although I've researched nearby bald eagle sightings and where their nests are (or have been in the past), still no luck in my last three outings. (I've seen and photographed quite a few wild horses in the area as well.)

I'm not sure if this info matters based on my request above, but I'm a novice photographer who loves taking nature shots and just took the dive into the DSLR world within the last year. I moved 'up' from a Canon SX50HS bridge camera to a Nikon D3300 and the typical 18-55 and 70-300mm kit lenses in early 2017, and because of the number of websites, YouTube videos and other instructional information I've absorbed, I graduated to a Nikon D5600 next. Due to a limited budget, I primarily carry Tamron 18-400 and Tamron 150-600mm (G1) lenses in my kit. I have my sights set on a D500 and am renting a Sigma 150-600mm Sports lens this week to see just how much of a difference I think it makes in the long range shots I take. (I wish it weren't the case, but a long range prime lens is not really in the cards.)

Any advice on a few decent sections of the east valley area I mentioned above would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I see several models on Amazon. They have different style QR plates. The ball heads are very cheap; you could buy an entire ball head just to get a plate.

You could also look on eBay. Nearly everything can be found there.

Thanks jcboy3,
Went on ebay and found one from a company in SC. I don't want to get to excited until I have it in my hand.
