Great photo of a classic car! My first car was a well used 56 Victoria hardtop, sans crown and continental kit. It was 12V.

I have a monopod and I bought a handle from Amazon that screws directly into the threads and then I have an acceptable adjustable walking cane!!!

Good solution! As I posted earlier, it works even better with a quick release so you can easily switch between cane and camera.

Everyone so often I see questions about carrying a monopod (with the rest of the camera gear) on to a plane and the typical response is that you can and it is allowed as stated on the TSA website. So here is my ACTUAL experience with my monopod.....

So the bottom line is, no matter what the rules say (about anything), the security agents have the final word on what is and what is not allowed for carryon. For the trip home, it went into the suitcase!

Very interesting! Here is another approach to travel with a monopod that worked well for us elderly: Using an old cane handle and a quick-release mount so you can attach the cane handle instead of a camera, make the monopod also serve as a walking cane, also legal AFAIK. After building it, i saw such an adaptor for sale. The picture shows the Manfrotto monopod with home-made cane adaptor at left, set to a good length for walking, which can easily be adjusted to your height or collapsed when not in use.

This setup worked well during our last major travel year 2019, with MIT Alum trips to Australia, New Zealand, and Antarctica (also via Ushuaia). There were no issues with any airline or TSA or foreign Security Agents. But because everything... including the deck....is usually moving, it didn't get used much on the Nat Geo Explorer and was left in the cabin during Kayak or Zodiac excursions. With the ship at anchor, it was nice to have on the day I borrowed a Sigma 150-600 mm from the Photo Locker. Even with a Tamron 18-400 on my Nikon D7500, when zoomed out, the monopod was helpful on land or at anchor.

We were in Antarctica in 2019 December on the Nat Geo Explorer. I don't recall any problem with cameras or glasses fogging up. The inside of the ship was not very humid. But silica gel sounds like a good idea. BTW

This is one of Nikon's hidden gems. While I mostly use Nikon mirrorless cameras now, the D5300 is one camera I will not get rid of. It is small, lightweight, and with a robust sensor is capable of producing pro quality images. The only downside is not having an internal motor so if you want to auto-focus it requires a lens that has a focus motor. It would be a great camera for street photography with a small 24, 28, or 35mm lens. A fully articulating screen helps with that pursuit as well and also makes it a good camera for vlogging. Good luck with your sale, someone should pick this up quickly.

Agree. It also has built in GPS for geotagging, unlike any other Nikon DSLR. I used one as backup to D7500 in Antarctica and will be keeping it.

This the most recent post on light field cameras that i could find on UHH. Is there any more recent and better news or is the idea of a practical implementation dead?

Great concept and photo! Wasn't there a saying like whatever is old becomes new again? I can envision a picture with a modern EV next to a 120 year old Baker Electric.

Nice shot! Did he do that to the tree or was there a beaver involved? :-)

That's why I still have a D5300. But I believe the D6 has GPS built in.

Some of the bridge cameras and the water resistant point and shoots also had it.

Sadly Snapbridge linking to phone GPS is now the preferred solution for Nikon.

You are right. We have a P&S Nikon S9300, which has not only GPS, but also an electronic compass so you can see which direction the camera was pointing. In other Nikon DSLRs like my D7500, i use a Solmeta GPS that plugs into the flash shoe.

Nice shots. I recently read that the education level of Antarctica was the highest of any continent. Are there any permanent residents there, or just scientific stations where scientists and engineers rotate in and out?

Thanks. I don't know of any human permanent residents there.

D5300 is my back up camera which I set up for my son to use on our trip to Antarctica in 2019 Dec. AFIK, it is the only Nikon DSLR that has GPS built in for those of us who like to geotag. Here is a link to our pictures from that expedition. https://www.flickr.com/photos/tonyjag/collections/72157713758443993/

Once you have everything moved to the new Mac, delete some stuff. 50M out of 1T doesn't sound fun.

It's 50G left, but stilll good advice to delete some stuff. I have been a Mac user since 1984, so there is lots of old stuff in there. Thanks.

Thanks to all who replied. Please clarify the following per [ ]:
"On your old system, select everything and do Export as Catalog to an external drive.
[In Mac Migration Assistant?]
[All of my files and apps or just those relevant to LR and Creative Cloud?]
[If just LR, should I migrate all of the other apps and data before or after doing what you suggest?]

Then download the Creative Cloud app onto the new M1 Mac and get all your applications up and running. Open Lightroom and perform an Import from another catalog.
[The one on the external hard drive?] "

Help much appreciated.

In the past, there has been advice here on UHH regarding extra care when migrating to a new computer, particularly regarding LR Classic and its catalog. It was recommended to do it manually, not via migration assistant. But what about all of the other apps and files?

Current MacBook Pro: mid 2014, OS 10.14.6 Mohave
Intel Core i7, 2.8 GHz, 4 cores,
16 GB Memory, 1 TB SSD (only 50 GB left). LR Classic catalog resides there.
backed up to USB drives via Time Machine.
I plan to keep this system intact because it supports many aps, including Aperture, that Apple has abandoned.

My new MacBook Pro is ready to be picked up now, complete with an SD slot and magsafe power (though different form the 2014). It has 2 TB SSD, an Apple M1 Max chip with 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine. Genius bar would need both old and new computers for several days to do migration so I am going to do it myself, with help from AppleCare if needed. Should I run migration assistant first, then deal with getting LR to work?
