Well, you have a choice... You can use aperture priority and let the camera help you... or you can use AUTO. I'm not apposed to Auto settings. I didn't say that I only use manual settings and nothing else. I love to use the Sports mode to freeze fast moving subjects. When I don't have time to think about anything else and the bird is flying by.... that's when AUTO SPORT is perfect... and anyone that tells you you're cheating because you don't use manual all of the time has probably lost a few really good images because they "... only use manual settings."
Here are some photos that I took last summer on the Oregon coast in Auto mode. The last two were a seagull feeding frenzy that happen so fast I didn't have time to breath. I put the camera in auto and got some beautiful images. Sometimes you have to defy the purists and use your common sense.

I just couldn't agree with you more. Taking pictures should be fun, but not getting a shot of something and regretting it, is most definitely not fun.

I purchased Elements 12 yesterday from Office Max. I need to go on line to retrieve my activation code. I can't find anywhere on line to get it. Adobe charges by the hour for Elements tech support. Does anyone have the link for the activation site?
Thank you for your help.

I've used this link without ever being charged to have online help from Adobe.

Thanks for responding. I'll have to try Program mode. I've never used it and I suppose I should have during the process. I haven't heard anyone say anything about the Scene Modes. I find that interesting and I have to admit that I haven't used them either. I've been so focused on Manual and getting a good focus that I have overlooked a lot of things. I mostly shoot outdoors so I was thrilled when someone on UHH pointed out that I needed to be in AFC and try the back button focus. That was a giant leap for me.

Actually, I did mention [GASP] scene modes, which I have found sometimes work quite nicely..........

I'm sure pro's will always say Manual is the only way to go. I think whatever mode get's you a great shot is best. If you don't have the time to compose, and make manual settings, you'll lose a shot. So why not let your camera make split second decisions for you in those situation.

SS posted above some great advice and I'll chime in that I will use Auto when it's appropriate. I tend to use Apperture Priority more than any other mode, but there are time when I use Shutter and [GASP] Scene modes as well.

The reality is my camera is far smarter than I am. It's able to make decisions faster than I can. And it often can make a better shot than I can when in full manual mode.

It really comes down to the shooting situation.

You are one of the ones that take yourself WAY too seriously. Chill for a moment and realize that the post was meant to be funny....you have no idea what criteria I use to select equipment...if you want to compare notes...let me know...

You might want to quote the post you're referring to, otherwise, it's not clear at all who you're replying to.

The link was what led me to UHH as well. Sure, I never found "THE" answer, but I found a great community and I've stuck around and am darn-tootin glad I did.

Chris, welcome to the Hog. I guess if that reason was compelling for you, hey, it's your choice. My cats love sleeping on top of my camera bag. If they pooped in the camera bag, shame on me for leaving the door open, and the bag open as well. But I, 1, would certainly not hold it against my cats, nor 2, would I change brands.
So let me tell you very briefly why I shot a Canon.
When I started I wanted a Nikon, but was using a hand-me-down Canon 20d.
So I was shooting sports and nature, and trying to do some portraits. I had been researching the Nikon d200 that I wanted and knew all the lenses. So I took a look at Canon, just in case, since so many seemed to use it, they couldn't all be wrong.
I found out that for portraits, the Canon guys were using 85mm f1.2 lenses. And the Nikon long lenses didn't even have VR and were really heavy, and the focus motors made sooo much noise, you'd be lucky to even get a shot.
But my dream lens was a 200mm f1.8 for indoor sports.
Chris, I'm not a rocket scientist like you when it comes to picking cameras, as I actually had to do my homework. But when my cat sleeps on top of my 200 f1.8, it's actually ok, as the lens trunk is sealed.
I just hope that someday you too will have the oportunity to use those lenses as well, but it's not likely to happen till you go back to the poopy brand. Just the way it is! Have fun with your Nikon. ;-)

Chris, welcome to the Hog. I guess if that reason ... (show quote)

My Dear SS......me thinketh thou have missed the humor and intent of Chris' thread. Yes, we all know you are a die-hard-Canon-Fanboy. And that's OK. But this was clearly meant as light-hearted fun.

The first one the only thing I would say it needed to be perfect SOC was to have your sensor cleaned . Yes PP would make it better but is this what it looked like to you that day? If so excellent job

The camera's pretty darn new, so I don't think the sensor needs to be cleaned. Do you see any dust spots? And to my eye, it looks pretty much the way it looked when I took the picture. But I'm not saying PP couldn't or wouldn't make it better. I'm just saying it looked good enough to me that I didn't feel I needed to spend time PP'ing it.

That looks pretty good from here. Might increase the color temp just a hair....personal preference I guess. We have the vr1 version of that lens. It still gets used frequently on the D300s. Not the sharpest in the bag but very versitile.

Thanks. And yes, the 18-200VRII is not the absolute sharpest, but it's just so darn versatile that it gets used a lot.

I have no issue with any of your pictures. I quite like them even aside from the fact that they could be improved in PP.
I have not said I have any issue with your photos.
One of you guys invented that strawman.

You're right. I didn't say my pictures couldn't benefit and I've never said they're 100% perfect out of the camera.

Guess, I should slink away with my tail between my legs.........

You agree 100% with the OP then.

So why do you appear to be trying to disagree?????

I'm not trying to appear to disagree. I don't think you got the just of what I'm saying. While my pictures might benefit from some degree of PP, I don't do it very much as they're often good enough for me. I've never said my shots out of the camera are exactly what my eye saw. They're just often close enough.
