The Great Blue Heron is one of the most photographed majestic birds this time of year. Unfortunately, I do not live in an area where I can view their splendor so my only alternative is to digitally paint one.

This is my attempt with a digital paint program using a graphic digital display tablet and stylus to emulate the various brushes.

My goal is to practice and experiment with creating various textures and styles. Because feathers require a different technique than hair and fur, I gave creating a bird a go.

Everything starts with a sketch and a bird is a simple shaped subject to draw. I added some blossoms to provide contrast and to anchor the bird to the scene. Of course, the bird needed to sit on a branch.

I created the illusion of feathers by experimenting with a brush that emulates a hard-edge watercolor bush. Choosing a pale white color created a ghost in the shape of a feather which I laid down much like laying shingles on a roof starting at the bottom and working toward the top to create an overlap.

Perhaps not the best for a first attempt although I'm always working toward improvement.

Here is one captured by my wife, Wendy, using her Nikon Z50 and Nikkor Z 16-50mm lens during Autumn 2022. It was recently converted to B&W in PhotoLab 7.

Both images from MidJourney. Clouds processed in Photoshop to change dimensions and uploaded to Luminar Neo and replaced the original sky. Ship image processed using Generative Expand. Flattened image and used Day to night LUT and Blend Mode "Hard Light" at 58% to finish the image
