Totally agree: "We need to start taking this (the Chinese virus) seriously."

This is the last time you'll have to listen to me rant about this... (the "Chinese virus) !

I was introduced to UHH by a young 25 year old girl who lives in Florida. She's a professional photographer. During the football season she shoots for the Miami Dolphins, the US Tennis Open and for the Orlando Pride Women's Professional Soccer Team. She can only shoot on weekends though because she is also a full time medical student. Right now, with classes cancelled because of Covis-19 she can't go to school. So she does volunteer work at a medical facility doing testing for the virus, just to try and help out. Doesn't get paid for it, but she works there every day, seven days a week from noon to 5PM, just because she feels that she should " do her part" to help Americans stricken with the virus . I think she's one hell of a gal.

She's also my adopted Chinese daughter.

Yesterday about 10:30 in the morning she called me. She was crying. She had driven to a Public's grocery store to do some food shopping. As soon as she got out of her car some asshole stopped his pickup, got out and started screaming at her that she should " Go back to China and take her fucking virus with her ! " He then threw a rock at her. She was so scared that she didn't notice where he actually got the rock but he had one and threw it at her. Fortunately it missed her but it did hit and broke the windshield of her car. Naturally she was petrified and ran across the parking lot to get away from him. Wasn't necessary though as he got back into his truck and drove off.

Ever since our wonderful president and his administration began insisting that they call the virus the "Chinese Virus " instead of the Coronavirus or the Covis-19 in an obvious, blatant attempt to blame the Chinese people for some of their own shortcomings lots of other folks have followed suite. As a result the number of hateful verbal and physical attacks on Chinese has GREATLY increased. That's not an opinion... that's a fact ! Maybe a lot of folks have just got their head up their ass and don't realize what they're doing or maybe they just don't give a damn.

But those of you who who insist on perpetuating the president's racist BS.... You just keep it up. You keep on calling it the " Chinese Virus " and see if you can't help him spread more hate. You're doing wonders towards uniting a very divided country. Oh, and you should be thankful that it's not YOUR daughter that's being subjected to your racist attitude.

You keep it up, but me...I'm outta here !

Now THAT is reprehensible. However it's the individual's unbridled inability to contain himself and his attitude towards others, not the reference to Chinese virus. The fault is not on the name/phrase used, but the person reacting to the phrase.

So the solution is to eliminate the phrase instead of people learning to contain their emotions and how to behave? In that case I can think of THOUSANDS of words that should be eliminated from the English language just so people don't get upset or hurt feelings.
Wouldn't it be simpler for people to be fetched up proper and be responsible for their own actions? Not others responsible for not getting them upset? Learn that things happen and how to deal with it, and not everyone gets a participation trophy so no one gets their feelings hurt?

OIE.
Wait, I probably can't use that word either.........

Longshadow,

I totally agree with everything you've just said !

It is reprehensible. And the fault is not on the name/phrase used, but the person reacting to the phrase. And the best solution is " for people to be fetched up proper "

I just also believe that not everyone is fetched that way. And that there are some pretty low folks who sometimes do act in pretty reprehensible ways. And that is how some folks ARE reacting to that phrase.

So while I agree that the virus did start in China and there is actually nothing really wrong with calling it the China Virus or even the Wuhan Virus other than the fact that some folks ARE reacting that way. And so it would be so simple to simply call it the coronavirus and and try not to get those jerks all riled up even more than they are.

OK I'll get off my high horse now and leave it be. I would only ask (!) that you consider calling it something other than the Chinese virus.

Have a nice evening Longshadow.

Don't say American Cheese either.
Someone from another part of the world may get offended.

Hmmmmm. What should we call Scotch Whiskey and Irish Mist?
Better rename those also.

What about NO to made in China?

Of course you can call it what ever the hell you want to call it. I don't know anyone who's actually beaten up American Cheese, Brazil Nuts or Portuguese water dogs but I do know of a 17 year old girl in Ft. Lauderdale who was rather badly beaten and told to go back to China ONLY because she's Chinese.

The fact is that the number of verbal and physical attacks on Asian Americans around the nation has spiked. And calling the coronavirus the " Chinese Virus " has unquestionably been a contributing factor in that spike. But if you're not bothered by that then you continue to call it whatever you like and I'll stop crying the blues.

When I read the words "China Virus" I don't think less of Chinese people. Like was said, it was a geographical starting point, not an attack on the people there. How about the "Hong Kong flu" of 1969? That was not a racist comment, it just meant a starting point of a disease. Does the "Tasmanian devil" reflect open our friends down there? Can I eat "Brazil nuts" without thinking about the people there? And we have the "Portuguese man of War in our local oceans, and the "Portuguese water dog" walking around in our parks. Does that make the Portuguese people somehow inferior? How about the "German measles"? Is that a direct attack on our German friends, many of whom are our ancestors. Please, get over this PC stuff. Calling something a name based on origin has nothing to do with racist thought. At lease not in this case.
When I read the words "China Virus" I do... (show quote)

While I fully understand how you feel and I appreciate that you don't feel racist or think less of the Chinese people when you refer to this virus as the " China virus " I still cringe when I hear or read of folks, especially our president, using that term. While many of us don't feel racist towards the Chinese because of the origin of the virus many, many folks here in the USA do. As witnessed by the fact that ever since the president and his administration started insisting on calling it the " Chinese Virus " instead of the coronavirus or Covid-19 there has been a large increase in the number of attacks, both verbal and physical, on Chinese here in America. So I cringe not because of " politically correct stuff" but because it obviously incites hatred towards Chinese, even Chinese Americans, Japanese, Vietnamese, Koreans and anyone else that looks Asian.

And that.... is just wrong.

So I personally wish folks would stop referring to it at the " Chinese Virus " even though that's where it originated.

And if for one second you think I'm wrong about it enticing hatred toward Chinese just ask me for an example or two. I have a few that are real close to home.

I'm interested in getting a Sony A9 but maybe I'm being penny wise and pound foolish. Maybe I should just spring for the other 500 bucks and get a new one.

Thanks for all the responses. I guess I'll just sit and think about it for a few days and look closely at the state for the piggy bank.

Thanks again !

So what's the difference between going to EBay and buying a $3000.00 used camera ( with no useful warranty ) and going to EBay and buying the same $3000.00 Brand New grey market camera ( with no useful warranty ) ?

Any real practical difference ?

Thanks !

I have an Manfrotto 498RC2 Ball Head with two quick release plates I'd like to part with.

Although this is an older head it's designed to hold just over 17 lbs and is in fine condition and works very well. B&H no longer sells this head but these folks do and their ad gives all the details about it.

https://www.filmandvideolighting.com/manfrotto-498rc2-ball-head-with-quick-release-plate-midi-ball-head.html?_vsrefdom=adwords&gclid=EAIaIQobChMItNvVyc_p4gIVk1uGCh1kHQa7EAYYAiABEgLpIvD_BwE

$50.00 + shipping and thanks for looking.

P.S.

I also have five ( x 36 ex) rolls of outdated Kodak Professional 35mm 'Portra' black and white film that anyone can have if they want it for the cost to ship it.
