I know I'm a little late to this party nut your advice is absolutely spot on. When I first started, I had the good fortune to be next to a Philadelphia Daily News sports photographer who took some time between shots to explain his methods. Fill the frame, keep horizons level, offense, defense and ball in the photo and of course, faces. Thanks for your great input!!

Thanks for all of your comments. They will become the points I make in my argument for faster and longer glass!

I’ve worked hs and D3 college basketball and the lighting is very different at each gym. Anywhere from 1600 to 10000 iso at 2.8! I will use your response to help sway the new Canon owner to invest in better glass. Thanks

Thanks for the response. I'm trying to stop her from buying a 55-200 or 70-300 f/4-5.6 type lens, especially for indoor. I use the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 and wanted to hear from some Canon folks.

Hello to all
I need to know about a Canon lens for sports photography. It's a Canon EOS T7 body and I know a 70-200mm or 200-400mm Canon lens would be ideal. Indoor wrestling, swimming and girls softball. The issue is I am a Nikon shooter since 1971 and really don't know much about Canons. A family member is looking at a used Canon T7 and thinks an 18-55mm lens will suffice (I see a slow motion train wreck in her future lol). Also there are budget considerations. Looking for advice.
Thanks

Last night I noticed that my shutter was still set to focus when I took a photo of the moon. I reset the AF/AEL button to focus, turned the shutter button focus off and no problems once the camera auto focused. I don't know which Nikon you are using but the manual is available online. Look up shutter activation and choose off. Then go to Controls and make the AF/AEL button (or AF) the only way to focus. Only one other person mentioned this but you DON"T want the camera to re-focus when the shutter is activated.
All the other comments will help, cable release, mirror up, etc., but if your shutter is set to focus and shoot, the moon will not focus. Try it tonight. The moon is still about 98% so you can figure it out. Good luck and a happy, safe and healthy new year to you!!

Great photos! What camera/lens/settings did you use? I shoot NCAA women's soccer and I am always looking for new ways to show the ladies playing.

Hi Coach,
When I started chasing my grandkids around to various sports games, I was lucky to be next to a Philadelphia Daily News photographer who shared some great tips. I still see him at various HS games and he still shares his wisdom! The tips were plain and simple. First-keep the horizon straight. Second-fill the frame. Third-when you fill the frame include offense, defense and the ball (puck, football, soccer ball) if possible. I still admire his work when I see it online and follow this advice as much as possible. You want to tell a story, not just take a snapshot.
Good luck and keep on shooting.

Don't know what happened to the photos but it should be no harder than uploading to Onedrive!

I've seen the Blue Angels at several locations. Although I've been to Ocean City several times, it's never been there for the airshow. I'd expect they'll be as close to the crowd as this image below from Jacksonville, captured at 420mm on a full-frame camera. You should be able to use a 70-300 zoom on a cropped body.

You can click the URL link for all the EXIF data. Of course the specifics of your position and the light will dictate your exact settings, but I try for f/11 and 1/1000 to 1/1600 to freeze the jets and to capture all four (or six) planes in sharp focus, using a hand-held camera with both the Auto-Focus and Image Stabilization active for the lens and camera.

I use high-speed continuous on the drive mode and AI Servo for AF focus mode (Canon's continuous AF mode). Track the planes (enable the AF) as they approach, but release the shutter only when they approach the closest to your position and stop the burst once they move away. For the several times the two solo planes fly at each other during the show, watch where they cross. There should be a boat in the water marking that position. Pick one of the two to track and release the shutter burst right as the plane reaches the crossing point, with more luck than skill (at least for me), you should catch one frame with both planes.

Thanks again for your advice and the parameters you set down. I was only able to bring 2 lenses so I chose my 70-200 and 28-75 but was able to crop quite a few good shots. I've included a couple and again, thanks!

Ahhh.. just saw the show site. Enjoy the show. Did't have air shows like that when I was policeman there in OC.

The 50 yard line (their term lol) is 17th street. I’m not familiar with that part of Maryland so I’m not sure where they are coming from. I live near the former Willow Grove NAS and the shows stopped when they closed the base down-film days lol.

Nikon D5500 Nikor 18-300 3.5-6.3G VR

Not my usual thing but thought I'd try my hand for family.

Think I've got the lighting issues kind of under control, more composition and location suggestions.
*I think I should have switched to my 35 1.8 for the team photo

Any and all critiques/comments welcome.

Good job for a first try. Thomas902's observations were spot on but I would like to offer my experience.

When I started shooting my grand kids HS sports pictures, a Philadelphia Daily News photographer was there also. He was kind enough to offer his advice which was keep the horizon straight, fill the frame and get offense, defense and ball in the shot. In other words, tell a story. I've seen his shots in the "paper" (online) and I am reminded of his great advice every time I see his photos. Keep on shootin'..........
