The last time we visited the GC was at least 25 years ago, I did not remember there being Elk in abundance like there is now. Here are a few photo's of some of them.
walking through our campsite.

Stretching for the good stuff.

Just delicious!

Looking for bits to eat.

Oh my! I'd completely forgotten about this tragedy. Beautiful images, Rena, and a sad reminder...

Hi Donna, it is a sad reminder for sure and a little known event today.

Because of this accident there were major operational changes made to commercial aviation.

Thanks for looking Architect1776, the last time we were at the GC there was no plaque so it was good to see them acknowledge it.

In 1956 there was a mid air collision of two commercial planes over the GC, in 2014 they erected a memorial plaque in remembrance. If you have been to the GC, the site is located near the desert Tower.

Close up of the plaque.

Interesting, pretty. That's further North than I've ever been. Been as far from L.A., CA as Lee Vining, CA.

Thank you lamiaceae , there is much to see as well as a lot of history in the area. :)

I've been there too but didn't see the plaque. You got some beautiful photos. Several books have been written about the tragic Donner group. One that I liked was "The Indifferent Stars Above" by Daniel James Brown (2009).

It is rich with history that is for sure, thanks so much for looking glad you enjoyed the photo's.
