Nicely done, great image and proves that the 'rule' of never cutting the picture in half with the horizon doesn't matter sometimes..

Mystery solved, we've been looking at unprocessed RAW files. They always look woeful before being processed.
The second image of the labrador looks perfect, the first is just a technique problem. You had us all mystified for a while though.
Go shoot some more jpg's and let us know how you got on..

I never knew how dull the photos were until I saw the photos from a friends Nikon D100. The D200 I would think should be better or at least as good as the old D100. I always used Photoshop to correct photos. I was not aware they should not be so dull from the camera. DUMB ME!

Not dumb at all, you weren't sure what to expect I guess. The D200 is a good camera and the results straight out of the box should be fabulous, not as good as the latest whiz-bang models but certainly capable of great images and without the need to use Photoshop. PS and other enhancement programs can improve images but can equally spoil excellent photos.
Just one question, does the image look smoky and dull through the viewfinder or bright and clear?

Bought the camera March 2009 from Best Buy. They were clearing them out for $650.

Does that mean it's a new problem or have you been putting up with it for four years ?

All you need to do is adjust the contrast in elements and perhaps as I DID up the colour a little, under 10 seconds.

It looks like an overcast day

Shoot at iso400
Switch to ap priority
set the camera to (hang on no battery) Auto or daylight white balance (overcast)

In the menu try VIVID picture control, I do like this
setting

Sorry I think you're barking up the wrong tree..
Changing to 400 iso won't make any difference..
Changing to Aperture Priority won't make any difference..
Changing the white balance will only affect color, not contrast
which the original image is sadly lacking..
Set the camera back to it's factory defaults first and then test it again, outside.

Wash your windows !! It's never a good test shooting through glass anyway, get your body outside, you'll like it :)
There's no way a D200 would take such low contrast images even at it's default settings.
Clean your lenses & filters and reset the camera to it's defaults before you start tinkering with settings.
They are great camera. The problem's happening through the glass either the window or the lens. imho.

One problem with buying it in the US and bringing it back to Oz is that Adobe then refuse you any support..
Apple are exactly the same, iTunes are more expensive in Oz as are iPhones and Macs.
Adobe, Apple and Microsoft were dragged kicking and screaming before an Australian Parliamentary Committee to explain their price discrimination against Oz consumers only last week and failed miserably to justify themselves. I personally don't see anything changing, it seldom does. Another waste of taxpayers funds just to make a noise and appear to be do be doing something.
