I have a show coming up in April at the Spark Photo Festival in Peterborough Ontario Canada and due to some massive house repairs I can't afford to properly frame my prints. Being a digital specialist I figured to do it all digitally and use a peel and stick substrate. I have 2 choices and ask your opinion on which one strikes you as more presentable. Of course the double mat would save me a pile of black ink considering that the entire show is in B/W but the triple just seems to pop. I have 34 prints to do and many are panoramas so that black ink just may become an issue. But certainly not as much as framing would be. Thanks for your help.

I love both of them but on a wall and in a professional situation I think the triple works best

I too have had the same problem, it is distressing that you can no longer kneel down, it is just too painful. So I carry one of those neck beanbags, lightweight one, that I put just UNDER my knee so my knee is not on the ground, I find this works well and it weighs next to nothing. I can clip it on and off in an instance and also use if for supporting the camera when shooting from the car window so double whammy.

I’m looking for help to add additional storage and backup for my lightroom catalogue. (My apologies in advance for not being that technical … hence why I’m reaching out to you.)

I’ve been shooting with Nikon D750 and just got the D850 for Christmas. Due to the file size of the images of the 850, I started thinking about (and worrying about) storage, which got me then thinking about backup, too. I fear that both situations are inadequate.

Here’s my setup:
~MacBook Pro (2019)
~Lightroom Photoshop with all images stored on external drive (WD 2TB My Passport Ultra; 7000+ images)
~Backup to Time Machine on external drive (again a WD 2TB My Passport Ultra … I’ve assumed all along that this backs up my lightroom catalogue residing on the other external drive … is that true?)

Please advise on storage space and backup with any/all recommendations. I am an Amazon Prime Member so I have access to their free storage. I have OneDrive and storage on Microsoft360. I’d also be willing to subscribe to a backup service if it makes the most sense. I have no idea how to go about copying or uploading my lightroom catalogue from the external hard drive to a new backup location.

I know I’m asking a lot. I’m hoping there’s a kind soul out there in the mood to take on a challenge!

Many thanks for your help and patience!

Wow I can't believe you have asked these questions, I have exactly the same problems and issues and being not technically minded I find it all a jungle to my brain capacity. Thank you for asking the questions, mine would have been identical.

I’m not yet a LR expert - just got a camera and joined this forum... but knowing Adobe and using Photoshop / premiere often enough... you should try eliminating those photos from the equation and use photos you know are ok. Import them into LR and see if you can do what you’re trying to do with the photos in question... if LR freezes up - your problem is with LR or Mac. If it works properly - it’s something with the photos. If it’s a problem w/ those photos... have him resend or open them in preview and export in another format maybe? If it’s a problem with LR - go on Adobe and download a different version (maybe latest update screwed something up - sometimes that happens with premiere). Good luck.

I am just about to try your suggestion - he has now sent by WeTransfer - so fingers crossed but I honestly think it is my Mac for some reason, don't know why, just a gut feeling. Thank you for your help

Did any of these suggestions resolve your problem?

Thank you so much for all the very helpful replies to this problem - I think there must be something wrong as every time I try to use any of the methods LR seizes up and I have to turn my Mac off and restart. I am sure most of the methods mentioned will work as you are all good hogs at post production. I think I need an expertr to look at Mac.

My son sent me a couple of photos to look at, I put them in my Downloads photo and tried dropping them into LR to import directly from my Download folder. Firstly the import button greyed out but I tried to put them in a folder with no luck at all.

Then my LR just kept freezing altogether and I have to manually turn the Mac off and on to get everything back but each time it crashes as soon as I try to do very basic edits.

Is their a glitch at the moment. Also I cant find my metadata where you can trace pics etc I just cant seem to find it. I feel such a fool but I really am perplexed over all of this. Thank you hogs.

Hi Linda, you said "When an amateur takes a photo he takes what he sees and sometimes things like skies are often blown out." This may apply to you but it certainly does not apply to all "amateur" photographers. It actually demeans those of us who try very hard to take the best possible image which includes not blowing out any highlights, getting all of the available tones, and composing carefully to convey our message. I do photography what I see, but the emphasis is on "I," not the equipment. I use the equipment carefully to fulfill my vision of the scene or object before me. If you are consistently blowing out highlights you might benefit more from reading up on metering. For digital photography standard best practice is to meter for the highlights, this way they are not blown out.

On the subject of sky replacement, I like to think I am an artist, not a documentary photographer.

I do apologise to all if i have offended in any way, I wasn't trying to say an amateur is rubbish at photography, of course, that is entirely rubbish, I have seen many, many excellent amateurs win all sorts of awards and produce marvellous work. I do know sometimes (for me) I find it difficult to get the whole range of sky and landscape range into one photo. I hold my hand out to those of you who can achieve this with your skills in photography,if this happens I would happily replace the sky with one of my own taken at a different time. I was merely pointing out that I think some composites take hours and hours of work, the results are wonderful and I think they have a place of their own in comps.

I agree with you - commercial photographers MAKE a picture, its their job and good luck to them. When an amateur takes a photo he takes what he sees and sometimes things like skies are often blown out. I also agree that to replace that sky with one of your own makes that picture better, why wouldn't you. Sometimes even using an internet sky is acceptable to make your print look more acceptable is definitely not a bad thing. As you say artists (painters etc) do this all the time so what they are creating is more
pleasing to the eye.

Even if you are using that photo for a competition there is nothing to say that there is anything wrong with enhancing a photo, I do this myself. My only argument is that there should be a separate part of competitions for doing composite work of great proportions. I admire these people who can spend hours and hours MAKING a composite look great. Jealous, in fact, but please let us lesser mortals get somewhere in the comps with our more simple remedies and lovely photos that we have taken.

Sky replacement would be a bridge too far for me, but it's a matter of personal taste. I admit to being a purist. Eventually Photoshop will have Full Photo Replacement. With the FPR feature enabled, your crappy backyard snapshot will morph into a jaw-droppingly gorgeous image of your family created by an algorithm duplicating the style and talent of Arnold Newman or 20 other legendary portrait photographers.

Creative Sky Replacement. Westport MA.

I enjoy both formats and love seeing some of the composites in comps etc. BUT I do think, as technology is so sophisciated now, there should be a separate section for composites, fine art etc etc. it would make life so much easier for us who are not really capable of the very advanced stuff in PS and all the other programmes etc.

I have bought several items, camera wise, from grey market, the company is Panamoz I think they are ex cellent they do what is says on the tin, miles cheaper than the likes of London Camera Exchange, every item has been brand new and perfect. If the item purchased ie D850 looks new, acts and performs like new, what is the problem. I bought my son the D850 a year ago ancd it is still perfect. It definitely was brand new as well.
