A recent visit to Perdido Key, Florida only offered one really nice day. A walk on the beach afforded a few photo ops, including this one where a bird is not the least bothered by fishing poles as he or she searches for a next meal.

Been on two photo safaris in Africa. The bean bag is the best choice. Both the tripod and monopod are cumbersome in the close quarters of a vehicle (your travel companions will appreciate it). Since many of the subjects that you wish to photograph will be moving, it is much easier to hand hold or use the bean bag.

Your comments about the C-7A Caribou were a little off. The transfer of the aircraft from the Army to the Air Force began in early 1967. The agreement was that the Air Force would use them in support of the Army. Although some C-7s were transferred to the ARVN, that did not occur until 1972 or 1973 when U.S. forces began disengaging from Vietnam. The Air Force brought several squadrons of caribous back to the states where they were assigned to Reserve and Air National Guard units in Alabama, Georgia, and Virginia. As South Vietnam was being overrun, many military and civilians escaped to Thailand in well overloaded ARVN C-7s (normal passenger load was 32 troops, but loads of near 100 were reported during the evacuation).

The 70-300 and the 24-85 should cover your needs! Any thing else would be overkill and just more to pack, carry and keep up with! Enjoy the cruise.

Great shots, especially one and four! Five is also noteworthy, but would like to see a color version.

I have had a PIXMA G620 for several months. So far it has worked very well. Print quality of standard documents and photos are both excellent. The only drawbacks are that it is a bit "noisy" and slower than some of my previous Canon printers. Too early to gauge ink usage, but it appears to be good.

Don't get sucked in to this. A friend of mine lost $2000 in a similar scam. Was suppose to take delivery in a town 75 miles away. Supposed dealer was a "no show". When called, he asked for more money to complete the deal. Would not refund her original deposit.

Not sure of the exact dates, but the Air Force stationed two C-7 squadrons at Phu Cat, two at Cam Rahn Bay and two at Vung Tau. In 1970, the two Vung Tau squadrons were moved to Cam Rahn (The colonel wing commander wanted to be the "big dog" on the base and having the most personnel and equipment under his command made that happen).

I flew the C-7 as an Air Force pilot in 1970 and served as an instructor for AF pilots being assigned to Vietnam until 1973. The Air Force did not "promptly transfer" the C-7 to the Vietnamese Air Force. The did not occur until U.S. forces began withdrawing in late 1972 or early 1973. When the aircraft was initially transferred from the U.S. Army to the Air Force, the understanding was that it would be used as "dedicated support" for the U.S. Army. That is the way it was used with very few exceptions. The C-7 was perfect for operations into and out of short, unprepared airfields.

One other comment regarding gear to take. The safari drivers will get you very close to the animals and the animals are used to the safari vehicles being there. So, super long lenses are not that important. The first time I went to Africa, I had a 25-300 mm lens, which was plenty. On one day we had a cheetah amble up to our vehicle, jump up on the hood, lie down and look at the occupants as if to say, "take my picture"! After 2 or 3 minutes, he jumped down and ambled off just like he had approached us to begin with.

Have been to Africa twice. Forget the tripod and/or monopod (too cumbersome to use in a safari vehicle). A good bean bag will suffice. Taking a backup camera is a good idea (saves changing lenses in dusty conditions and gives options if problems develop in the field). Make sure and have extra batteries charged and ready.

I am from the same area as you are and appreciate the camera angles that you used to take these photos. Most people take the path of least resistance and shoot from the road, which results in a rather mundane photo. I really like shot #1!

We were in a safari vehicle with 5 people. The Land Rover had an open top to facilitate easy photography. Most of the animals were very used to these vehicles and paid little attention to them---except if something unexpected occurred. While observing a bull elephant, one man in our group decided to boost himself on to the roof of the vehicle. The elephant was taken aback by this move, felt threatened, and went into full aggressive mode---trumpeting, ears flapping, making short charges, etc. Our driver quickly threw the Land Rover into reverse and got us the hell out of there! Needless to say, the guide gave the offending party a tongue lashing, explaining that there would be no more of that!
