I agree with Wahawk's assessment that the flag looks better in Roobears version of this background flip, but Roobear's representation of the U.S. flag is incorrect. If you look at a diagram of proper flag specifications; the 2nd white stripe down from the top of the flag shows a white star directly across from the white stripe, theirs doesn't have that. Don't get me wrong mine was incorrect also.

I don't think you can see that section of flag because of the folds in the material. I didn't change the placement of the stars on that side. I did trim some off that side so it wouldn't be a flat edge where it was the edge of the photo. I did however add a little to the bottom of the flag (of course maybe that is the side you are talking about), but with the folds, I don't think you can really tell exactly which section you are looking at.

I've tried without real success... could one of the Photoshop gurus help me flip the background keeping the portrait the same, but flipping the background so the flag is in back of my right shoulder? I've seen some of you background changes that were pretty amazing. THanks!

Here's my shot at it. You're the judge for better or worse.

That's great too!! How'd you do that? Please, enlighten me. I promise I'll keep the secret :)
You guys are the best!

These last edits are both great but I prefer "roobear" version because it keeps the 'star field' in the upper left of the flag per flag protocol.

I'm glad you are happy with the edit I did on your photo, but there was something that bothered me about it and I just had to go back and fix it. The edge of the flag was too soft and looked a little unnatural, so I fixed it. You may like it the way it was, but if not here is the updated version.

I agree that the first shot is better. Not only does it have better composition, but it also has a little more contrast (the second shot looks a little flat to me).

Here is my attempt. Cutting right at the edge of hair is always tricky, so I tried to cut inside the edge of the hair. I don't know if this is any better or not???

That looks really nice, good job

Illindstrand, I don't like it when people go back and forth on here so don't take this in a rude manner, but it appears as though you flipped the entire photo, is that what you did?

No I did not flip the whole photo. What the original artist asked for was a background flip and that is what I did. The gentlemen is the same as in the original picture.

I apologize, when I went back and looked at it carefully I flipped the background in the wrong place which flipped the whole image. I have now corrected it.

That's funny considering the original photo has the hair parted on the right and yours is on the left, the same goes for the freckle below the eye.

I created a layer mask to hide the overlap and used a soft brush around the edge so it wouldn't be such hard line. I also may have used a lighter opacity. I can't remember all the steps I did, but those are a couple of things that work for that task

This is my first time posting to the forum but I do quite a bit on photoshop and this was an interesting topic for me. I played around with your photo and this is what I came up with. I didn't flip the background, but I actually moved the flag over and did some other editing to the background so that it had the same light source and looks more natural.
