I've read it before. It still makes me smile and laugh. Thanks
I was in the Rockies and had hiked to a remote location one night to shoot the Milky Way over a lake. While sitting on the ground composing my shot I felt I was being watched, but looking around I could see nothing. After taking my shot, I turned to my camera bag that was next to me and found a coyote sitting next to my bag about 3 feet away. We looked at each other and resumed watching the Milky Way. He stayed for about 10 minutes.a I've frame the photo and can never look at it without remembering my visitor.
Composition is something that I feel. I know the rules--but regard them as suggestions, nothing more.
For me I start with intent. That is what exactly am I trying say with this image. What do I feel and see. Then I ask, how do I show a viewer (that could me myself) what I am seeing and feeling. This process makes me consider light, color, space, line, in short the 15 elements of photography. I operate like an artist with a blank canvas arranging things to make the viewer feel what I felt while on location.
I find this often starts with asking myself, why did I stop and look at this scene. What exactly made me stop? Then I set of the image so that when I look at it later, I will see and feel the same as when I was there.
I love these flowers. They are just intoxicating. So are your photos! :-)

Thanks for the extended explanation of how your image was created. One final question: you mentioned light cubes. How were they used / deployed? Was the boat illuminated by ambient light?
Lume cubes ae small LED cubes that give continuous light. They have various levels of light, can be tinted with gels and set up just about anywhere. Check out the link to B&H here:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=lighting%20cubes&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=maThere really was not enough ambient light to serve my needs so I used the cubes to softly light the boat.
You can get off brand cubes for lesser costs and they will work quite well.

I have a Milky May shot not nearly as good. Not sure where the stars leave of and wherer the noise begins. Same Austin when I expand your shot. Is it your judgement that they shirt is relatively noise free?
Where is the boundary between top and bottom images? I'm guessing about 1/2 way up the front of the wheel house.
About how many images were stacked in the upper, Milky Way past off three image?
Where shot - need little light pollution for such a great image.
They don't get any better than those!
Looks especially brand ing Download. br br I have... (

Shooting at 400o ISO you will never get a smooth as creamy background unless you crank of the the noise reduction until you blur everything. This will print quite nicely and won't look all pixelated.
The shot, as conceived, is actually two shots of eight exposures. One was shot at 1000 ISO and one was shot at 4000 ISO. Each of these sets was merged together creating 2 semi final images. These two images were loaded into Photoshop as layers. I then alined the two images and then blended the two layers together using my eye to decide exactly where. The cut offs were in shadows and solid lines on the boat. Where ever I thought I could hide the merge line. This is shot on a beach on the Florida panhandle where in the distance there is nothing but Mexico. There is a but of glow from Florida on the far left but not much. The sky was mostly clear with so me cloud on the horizon.

You have to scroll down further on the first page to the second post. I can not fix the original post. The second one works
My pleasure. Glad you got to see the full size image.
