I had a tutorial play on Amazon Fire TV in which the instructor said that you need a small allowance to be at the bottom below the subject and twice that allowance of space above the subject's head/top. based on that advice, you might try cropping No 1 from the bottom until the space below his feet is half the distance above his head. See if the instructor's advice works for you. ALSO The subject seems (at least to me) crammed up against the left edge. Is there more photo there in the original so he can have a little breathing room?

I understand what the instructor is saying as you relate it, however, seems this may be just a loose guideline which will depend on the image. Yes, the subject is crammed up on the left edge and, unfortunately, no photo exists where he can have more space there. Thanks for your detailed comment.
Reminds me of the Menomonee River when I was up in Wallace, MI. Could see my toes on the bed in five feet of water. Could even see the bed in the deeper channel of the river. This was back in 1960s. I hope that it is still clear now as it was then.
Thank you for dredging up great memories.
