I hadn't read that story but have just read a plot summary.

Worth finding. The short story beats the movie hands down.
A FYI.
Inigenous peoples in the range of army ants actually like them.
They just vacate home with all edibles and animals when the ants come.
When the ants are gone, so are ALL vermin.

I am thinking this ant maybe a Myrmica ruginodis but would like confirmation or otherwise if anyone knows. It has the spikes.

And who can forget 'Leningen Versus the Ants'?
I was not a Heston fan.
I was all for the ants.

A set of flower mix shots.
Hope you like !

Refreshingly nice.
I thought for a bit that it was going to be a clutch of those sickly simulacrums sold in the food stores.
Thank you.

Nice! It looks like an interesting one, with enlarged jaws. It is from one of the families with antennae that are not elbowed, so that would narrow down the ID.

It did, indeed narrow it down, but not much.
It broke weevils into two groups.
One smaller, not much.
Obscure weevils with geniculate antenna and obscure weevils with straight antenna.
The keys weigh about five or more pounds.
A large and difficult family.

You have most surely gotten this ant's ID.

I will quote Wikipedia now, "
" M. ruginodis is a species of ant that lives in northern parts of Europe and Asia".
May be 20 queens in a colony of 2500 individuals.
I once had both Wilson's "Ants" and Wilson and Holdobler's
book on ants.TOMES. But a ' tome' of information.
Went when I downsized.
Oh, the memories of a man in his old age......
Nice work, Brenda. ID and shooting.

Nicely rendered. I think it would be better sans cat.

Would be OK with a real cat. Or no cat.

Yeah, we have so many bee parasites, it is amazing that we still have enormous quantities of honeybees! Thank you!

Good thing these nest in solitary, ground dwelling bee nests.
The Honey bee, which is a non native 'invasive', may never have become established.
Much less of the foods that we have come to like would be available.
NONE of many others.

By the way.
These are carefree in the ocean front communities in Maryland and Delaware.
So they take extremes of weather.
And they are really colorful against most backgrounds.

An old unused psychiatric hospital - on my way to work one morning last week I took a slight detour specifically to shoot with my Pentax ES II loaded up with Kodak Tri X 400 - pulled to 200 -
Because I only had a 55 mm on the Pentax I couldn't back up enough to get a good shot of the front of the building - so I used the Canon M50 to shoot the front of the building - the second pic (I will return with my 28mm on the Pentax to re shoot the front probably this weekend!)

The place is very eerie - not a soul around except for a lone security guy keeping his eye on me from about half a mile away ...

Outside Annapolis is another one. Crownsville State Hospital, an "insane asylum" in those days (50's and 60's, then closed).
Horror stories abound.
I knew a woman who had been a nurse there.
No Florence Nightingale she. Up to her death in the 70's she never talked about her work.
Been wanting to do a few rolls of B/W film there.
Thank you for the push.

Thanks Bill. It's about 1cm long. Not all that large, the flowers are small ones.

That's 'large' in Lacewing larva. They may get 1.5cm, but not often. Adults all wing, not much body.

Someone mentioned edible flowers.
There are many, but only two are regularly sold at the grocery store.
What are they?

This is a Black Carpenter Ant that I found while throwing out the trash this morning. I scooped it up in my hand and brought it in and prepared it for a focus stacking session. They don't like to be held and the tend to bite. I've done others in the past and they make convenient and interesting specimens.

Most likely Camponotus pennsylvanicus.
They are fairly widespread.
Next segment of Shogun in the DVD player and queued.
Goodnight, Gary, all.
