Studying them-----always come back to no. 1 as the most provocative, powerful of the three.

Yes, I thought of Barbie. Hence the cryptic title. I had wandered around the Saturday Market, shooting vegetables, flowers, food stalls and people; secure in the belief that I had a pretty good eye for a picture. Not having done any chimping, I examined what I had upon returning to the car. This image blew me away: never, ever, while wandering around composing masterpieces, scrutinizing the crowd, did I see this tiny woman. So much for the "pretty good eye"!
Miniev's characterizations as unsettling and creepy are exactly what I felt. That it is a woman rather than a girl is born out by her clothes, her hair-do, her proportions other than that her head is large; and most of all, her posture and stance. Compare her image with that of the toddler being held on the right side.
Thanks to all who looked and responded, and especially to Graham and Miniev.

Many thanks to all responding to the original posting, WWII VETERANS on this section,3/20. It seems that only three of the responders were vets of that conflict, but others had interesting related stories from family members. I hope that there will be further responses as other UHHers discover the thread.

My service was unexceptional, un-heroic and quite brief: I enlisted for flight training in the Army Air Corps at age 17 in 1944. Was allowed to finish high school and called up late that year. After basic training at Keesler Field in Biloxi, MI and given temporary MOS's of bandsman, and truck driver; spent most of '45 driving or playing gigs in service clubs, or parade marching. Status was as an OLT (on-line trainee) awaiting openings in flight school. Soon after the A-bombs were dropped, about 30.000 of us were honorably discharged at the convenience of the government. Went in as a private--- came out less than a year later--as a private. Will be 91 in June.
Can it be that there are only three of us remaining ---on this forum?

The kit lenses are first rate optically and ergonomically. They're cheap enough to replace if you lose or break one---or wear one out--which you won't do. I just got a 24mm 2.8D which makes a great 36mm on my D5300. It won't AF on the 5300 or on any DX camera below the 7000 series because it has no motor. My 90 yr. old eyes have no problem with the manual focusing--aided by the range finder dot. Having no motor, this Japan-made lens will probably outlast the China-made 24/1.8G at less than half the cost.

While participating in a thread discussing the problems associated with the weight of camera gear as we age, I learned of one of our UHHers who is actively photographing, playing golf, and within the last month, flew in a WWII iconic fighter plane; at age 94!
It would be wonderful to hear from any WWII vets. War experience and what they are doing now would certainly be of great interest to this forum, so many members of which have served in uniform.

Bob wanting to get a 50mm. I shoot in a lot of clubs, resturants, street scenes and bars most with poor light. What to get 1.4 or 1.8?

I.8 should be plenty fast with any recent body. All go to very high ISOs. If you want to spend alot more, then go 1.4, or even 1.2. What body do you have?
Is Cal's Cameras still going strong in Costa Mesa? I've spent a fair amount there in the 60s and 70s. Lived in Costa Mesa 34 yrs.

Thanks for your reminder---but that's exactly where I did post it. It seems that classified postings are first posted once on upcoming topics. But thanks for your interest. Now, buy the lens.

Many thanks par4fore and kuzano, for your helpful and interesting comments. I talked with Stephen Gandy this morning and learned that the lens I want is discontinued, and that Camera Quest has sold out their stock. So, my chances of getting one aren't great. Not right now, anyway.
I have the 40/2.0 Ultron which I use on a D5300. Wonderful lens--and on that body makes a walk-around camera that is less conspicuous than my old Leica M2 with a 35mm Sumicron. But I long for a wider FOV than the resultant 60mm. The 28mm Skopar at 42mm FOV would have been perfect. I'm considering the Sigma 30/1.4 Art.
Thanks again
