Agree. They are readily attracted to suet feeders - which you can improvise by just using a net bag (like oranges come in) with a big chunk of suet from your local meat market. Much cheaper than buying the little suet pellets. You will also get hairy woodpeckers, their larger cousins.

Still driving my 2013 Outback at 120,000 miles. Has been pretty dependable, and when I lived in Maine my "winter tires" were studded snow tires. As long as you were careful, you could get where you needed to go with 4-wheel drive with studded tires!

I was amused while reading the latest John Sandford novel when a witness described a possible suspect as driving "one of those lesbian cars". The detective asks: "you mean a Subaru Outback"? I thought that was pretty funny, because I would assume that in Minnesota, like in Maine, a LOT of folks have Outbacks!

Nice photo of this little chickadee. Always prefer to see the download (requires that you hit "Store Original" when posting).

Nice. I never saw it lit up like that - but it has been years since I saw it.

Enjoy your holiday, I have been there and its great. We were told if you buy a bottle of water from stalls check that the bottle has not been opened as some are reused and filled with tap water...

When traveling in underdeveloped countries in the past, I learned that if you have the option of asking for carbonated water ("con gas" in Latin America) you can be pretty sure that the bottle wasn't just filled in the back room. Of course, soda is available worldwide, as is beer. Water that has been heated enough to make coffee or tea is generally safe to drink. No ice cubes should be used in your drinks in underdeveloped lands.

I don't like that image at all. It is too dark to see any detail, and it makes the bases of the antennae look like eyes (not compound eyes) and some hairs look like teeth. Some of the ant and fly macros we have seen here are much better in my humble opinion...

Speaking of quantities getting smaller, has anyone noticed my favorite drink, Gatorade, now comes in 28oz containers in place of the 32oz containers of the past. And if the price has changed, it has actually increased - we get to pay more for less???

I JUST noticed that - I do not ordinarily drink Gatorade, but I am scheduled for everyone's favorite test this week (a colonoscopy). Instructions to mix the prep with two 32 ounce bottles of Gatorade - I discovered it doesn't come that way any more! So - what about a 64-ounce bottle of lemonade - oh - wait - they are now 59 ounces! Holy crap....

Years ago scientists developed cell cultures in which they could grow human bladder and kidney cells. I imagine they shifted to creating hair follicle cells because THAT is where the real money is! The problem with lab-grown tissue is that it is easy to grow it in thin sheets on a culture medium - but getting it to form into organs such as kidneys, with internal blood vessels and other plumbing, is not an easy task. This technique is useful, though, in growing artificial skin that can be used to treat burns.

They traveled well - but was this back in "the good old days" when the restroom had a sign that said "Do not use toilet when car is stopped at the station"? That, of course, was because the toilet seat merely sat over a hole in the floor!
